A new lightweight 300 Win Mag for $400.

I'm very interested in the results you get from your 300 win mag. reading a lot about this rifle and it seems like people run into some loose screws out of the box very commonly.

I recently bought the mossberg/vortex combo in 30-06 for my first rifle. Chose it mostly because at the price point it seemed to offer the 'nicest' optics combined with a rifle that gets decent enough reviews. Mostly interested in hunting rather than shooting at this point so not expecting or demanding moa groups or anything. Just need a rifle to get me out in the bush the next couple falls.

Would be interested to hear what loads etc yours seems to prefer.. although I'll be shooting factory ammo and not reloading.

It might not be pretty but i'm still super pumped to get out there and shoot my first gun.

The stock stabilization/bedding might be something i mess around with in the future.

No problem, Hoyt, I stopped and got it for you on the way home from church today.

Ironically, I spent the morning on my knees praying for that very thing... the Lord moves in mysterious ways... your hands are His hands...

Speaking of prayers....... I am sincerely praying that my next rifle purchased from Hoyt doesn't show up in a mossberg box.... the tikka box he sent me last time was bad enough!.....

All I good fun..... interesting thread Ted..... looks like you have some work to do, but I actually wager it will shoot when you are done....

Realistically speaking, using modern manufacturing techniques and taking into account only the action and barrel, there is no excuse for making a rifle that can't shoot with a bit of effort.....

How was the recoil why not??

It is not as ferocious as one might think. Scoped, the outfit weighs 7lbs, 11oz. That's 1lb, 3oz, lighter than my Vanguard 338 in its Carbelite stock. The recoil is about the same in both rifles.

If this wind ever lays down, will get back up to the range for the 100-300 meter testing.

Just got back from the range again, no wind, excellent lighting, here's the first three shots at 100 yards.

Two shots touching, one out 1 5/8 inch. Velocity average 3060fps.

Remember I said I had put a witness tape on the scope tube? Well, one edge was tight against the front edge of the scope ring. Here's where it is now.

The scope has slid ahead 3/32" under recoil after the screws having been tightened twice, and the tube is scratched. So much for the garbage rings. They are over-torqued now, and likely to strip if turned in any more.

Adjusted the scope inch and a half left, same down, and took two more shots. One chicken gone off the rail at 200 meters, and one pig at 300. Certainly good enough for hunting, but needs decent rings. Again, this testing was done to see what Johnny Weekend Hunter would have ended up with had he just taken what came with the package.

Will install better rings and shoot the 100 and 300 meter groups with the same load.

Oh, and some good news, the creep in the trigger has completely disappeared! Strange, because I never touched it. Will keep an eye on that.

Ted
