A new thread on an old subject OIC Cannon ban

I searched for the old thread on this subject but nothing would come up, hense the new thread.

There are a lot of members that hold to the belief that Cannons are still under the old regulations before the May 1st 2020 OIC, I'm not one of them...I hope they are right but I think the OIC is very clear and so far, very enforceable.

Their belief is about to get tested in court for the first time....It was jut published that a young fellow in Winkler ,Man has been charged with a 7 of firearms offences, among them being charged with "Possession of a banned Cannon and another charge of "manufacturing a banned cannon" and there is also a listing of "cannon fuse" in the seized items so this cannon must/probably is a fuse fired outfit that a lot of folks seem to think that that fact makes a cannon a non firearm.....I guess we will now see how vigorously the crown defends that OIC to the letter!!!

Definitely seems like one of those "not recommended as a stand-alone" charges they tack on, so they can remove them as part of a plea deal for a guy to plead guilty to the more serious charges.

Guess we'll find out. Interested to see what happens with this one.

Sounds like the OP is missing some context though. Looks like the guy got pinched for making suppressors, plus a bunch of other #### when they came to arrest him for that.

actually the weight of the main charges should be equal to a Lib prosecutor ....manuf prohib cannon & manuf prohib suppressors so probably not a "plea away the cannon part.

As for the question "what makes the cannon prohib" ....two sections of the 2020 IOC , both bore size & the muzzle energy it is capable of

the information that I received in response to a question to the technical division of the CFR was that the legality of modern manufactured cannons over maximum bore, (summarized) revolved around the use of the cannon. Cannons used as signaling devices (blank charges) as well as various industrial cannons / guns such as kiln guns and flare guns were legal. Implied was guns firing over diameter or over energy projectiles were prohibited. What was fuzzy were things like candy cannons and orange cannons because the respondent was not familiar with them. Candy cannons should be self explanatory and locally some people have cannons built and designed to shoot fresh oranges at targets. They are intended to entertain the spectators at black powder events,
I think therefore that large bore cannons fall into the same sort of dual category as antique firearms. They are not prohibited firearms for the purposes of registration and licensing but are firearms when used to commit a crime. As applies to cannons this probably means that if you have a history of shooting your cannon with blank charges or candies or unfrozen oranges, they are exempt from the overbore law. If you have a history of shooting solid projectiles, they are prohibited devices or prohibited firearms

It’s a good thing all those Africans fighting in the streets of NE Calgary last summer only had sticks and sandals.. could have been a REAL mess is if Trudeau hadn’t banned their cannons!

The fly in the ointment for that entire didertation Moon is that the wording of the OIC is "devise capable of" ...it doent have to be safe or doable a second shot...if it can be fired once and then blows up it was still a "devise capable of"

Following with interest. As soon as I saw that article about the arrest in Winker, the cannon question came to mind. I've always wanted to build a cannon.

One of my first thoughts when I read the article was to wonder if that young lad built that cannon after reading all the "yup, their still legal" posting on the earlier threads on this subject.

I did a quick calculation. A ten pin bowling ball, falling down a construction trash chute needs 6 - 7 stories to exceed 10,000 joules. And it's bigger than 20mm.
Does energy source count? A replica Roman scorpion would be prohib by the numbers

Looks like they charged him with anything , and everything . Hope he has deep pockets as he is going to get a full blown lesson of punishment by process ; although some charges will go away during plea bargaining if he agrees to plead guilty .
