Hi guys! I am new here and thanks for reading this. I am planning to buy my first rifle!

-Problem is, which store is better in vancouer area, or in greater vancovuer. The one has reasonable price and good Customer Support.

-I know .22LR bullets have different types with higher or lower speed, what is the difference in shooting them? which one is better for hunting?

-longer barrel means bertter accuracy for .22LR rifles, am I right?

-Ruger 22LR has a takedown model, with a bag! I like it but I am worried about rains, the connection part of takedown rifle is a weak point. Is weather really a problem for takedown rifles?

I've dealt with Reliable...all the way from Ontario here. Great people to deal with.

If it's your first, get a bolt action. More accurate, easier to clean, less to go wrong, etc. Marlin XT on the low end, CZs on the higher end would be my advice. Ammo~all kinds to suit all kinds of applications. Have the shop recommend something they have in stock for the application you have in mind. CCI is the brand I shoot most, and if all a store has is Remington .22 ammo in stock..I go fishing instead.

Reliable is the only place I go to buy new firearms.
Family owned & customer service is outstanding. No one else compares to them in the GVRD.

I've been impressed with Wanstalls service, they're in Maple Ridge.

I don't know much about the types of bullets or hunting with them... my girls use our .22 for plinking around mostly but I do know they prefer the semi-auto

Longer barrel is more accurate yes

Ever thought about getting one used, they can be had pretty cheap... lots of Lakefields and Cooeys (sp) out there

1. What are you going to be hunting? Usually the LR bullets are going to be your best choice for hunting squirrel, grouse etc. Shorts will be much quieter but will lack power to make a distance shot. The 1022 is a good little gun, but I would stay away from keeping it in the case /bag if you put it away even a little damp or warm from firing you risk the possibility of condensation and rust forming on your new gun.

+1 on bolt action for your first 22. I lucked out and have my grandfathers cooey. Great gun for close range. I then lucked out again and bought a savage btvs.
It is a tack driver but is really heavy with good glass. 12+lbs.
I have that for long distance shooting and an ultra light 10/22 3.75lbs with rds for close gopher shooting.
Hope this helps. rimfirecentral is great for more info.
6mmbr.com also is great.

Thanks guys! I decided to buy a stainless barrel plus synthetic stock ruger for hunting small animals.

I think I will take the semi-auto since it is cheaper.
Also, if I have to shoot a deer or bear, semi-auto will help me to send 10 to 25 bullets (depond on the magazine) in a few seconds.
I dont have hunting experience, but I believe 10 to 25 bullets will surely slow down the angry bear or a running away deer. Then I have time to reload.

If I am wrong, please feel free to correct me.
I dont want hunting class teacher brings students visiting me at graveyard, and saying:"This is the idiot who shot the bear 25 times with 22LR rifle and got teared apart by the wounded bear."

Im guessing a 22 would just anger the bear. Either it would fight or flight just like us.
Ive heard stories about people being shot and not even knowing it until they see the blood.
A 22 IMO wouldnt stop a bear.

I'd grab a hunting synopsis for your province and look at what you can and cannot hunt with a .22. A quick google search brought me to 'ht tp://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlife/hunting/regulations/' which has a PDF of the BC synopsis. Not only would it be illegal to hunt deer/bear with a rimfire firearm, but a 22 would be pretty weak against a bear, regardless of how many rounds you think you could pelt it with.

If you're buying a .22 for hunting you are limited to upland game birds, bobcats, lynx, and wolverines. Want to go after bear or deer? Grab a .308 or 30-06. If you're worried about being attacked while in the bush by a bear i wouldn't count on that .22 to stop anything that big that's more than likely pissed off.

Since nobody answered your take down question....
Their solid guns and dont consider anything on them a weak point they have their place.

I own a take down.. great rifle. Hunting with a 22 ...yea not a good idea ( except for small game). I like the 10/22 just so much fun to shoot. I agree with a bolt is easier to clean, but with the help of internet the 10/22 is not really that hard.

wow, this changes every thing. I suddenly remember that I watched many videos on youtube show that many robbers got shot many times by victims and ran away like they are bulletproof.
You guys are right, with ruger 10/22, I will be a piece of tasty cake for bear and I can not hunt deers.

Well since I can not use the rimfire for hunting large animals I have to go with centerfire.

Agree with last poster .. Buy both

You should consider a hunters safety course if given in your area .. You should learn all about rim fire and center fire limitations, and what rifle is allowed in the woods around you at different times of the year .. Example .. Now that you haved moved to center fire as a primary consider that you can not hunt with FMJ ammo .. That is the cheap target ammo you can purchase .. And you may only be in the woods with a center fire rifle during very few months of the year ..

Lots of info to seek out ... You asked about 22lr ammo and it's use, you just increased your choices by 10 fold crossing into center fire ..

And you may only be in the woods with a center fire rifle during very few months of the year ..

Not trying to be a pain.. but I'm not so sure about this being true. Pretty sure one can take their center fire with them into the woods all year long. Just don't go hunting :)

+1 for Reliable Gun and
+1 for bolt action
Best gun for the money I've ever owned: Marlin XT-22. Wow is it accurate. Never a single failure of any kind. The factory irons are less than impressive however, I'd slap a scope on there. Take care, have fun, you're gonna love it!
