A Nice 240 gr. 44 mag load

When I first started shooting the 44 mag it was in my Ruger carbine at the time, and I bought lots of H110 and Win 296. So I was trying pick folks brains here to find a load using what I got. Thank you all your imput thus far.
I bought my first S&W Model 29 from a logger from Petersburg Alaska.
It came with 2400 powder, Lead bullets and Federal Magnum Rifle primers.
The load was 26.5 grains and one round could be ejected with the rod but firing all six required they be removed with a brass rod individually.
It would appear encountering a grizzly while falling was not going to be a reloading situation.
It came with a chain saw cut across the backstop and grips . . . that in itself could have spelt "disasser".
I was corrected previously about Magnum Rifle primers not being compatible in the 44 mag but that is what came with the gun.
The C-Press, scale and powder measure were Pacific and I still have the last two.
Back to the question my load with 240 grain lead bullets was 24.0 grains of WW296 and Magnum Pistol primers

So you can ignore anybody telling you to use H110 or lil Gun because those loads kick REALLY hard.
I use 8gr of american select. It's very mild and accurate.

Really? H110 is more of a push. Snappy powders like titegroup and lil gun are much harder on me than full house H110 loads.
Am currently using 4.0 grains of W231 pushing a 240 grain LSWC for Cowboy Action shooting, it gives me a power factor of 120. If you go any lower you suffer from accuracy and bullet stabilization problems. This is a load for cast lead bullets, I tried substituting CanPro 240 grain bullets and didn't get the accuracy that I wanted. Also there is a small amount of powder residue left after firing off a cylinder full, but it does not cause any problems with the functioning of the gun.
250 gr Lyman cast with 20.6 grs of 2400.
A nice pleasant load is 9 grs of Unique.
For low recoil target load in my Contender 180 gr cast SWC with 5grs of Unique.

literally just finished up a run of 44s with 240 Campros over 20.2gr of 2400.
If the powder you have is H110 and 296 (same powder - different cans) then you can only make stiff loads. This powder is not suitable for down loading.
Unique, HS6 and Universal are good for a ranger of mild to stiff loads.

I highly recommend Vectan BA6-1/2 powder. 22.0 grains of it under a 240 grain Campro makes for a super smooth and clean max load. A noticeable improvement over IMR4227. 21.3 grains is noticeably lighter yet. Because it is a very bulky powder I can't stuff enough of it into the case to make a max load for a lighter bullet so H110 is still my go to for those. And I still load max H110 loads for 240's too because I gotta be me. But the Vectan has really impressed me with its performance and also its value. 10% more powder in the bottle and using 10% less per round adds up.
Yeah, as Ganderite said, H110 / 296 is an all or nothing powder. DEFINITELY not one to play around with reduced loads. If you have H110/296 then get some Titegroup or Universal and you'll cover off all velocities between .44 Russian and .44 Mag. You really only need two powders to load for the full range of .44 velocities. My preference is Titegroup, it'll load from "leave the bullet stuck in the barrel" speed to 100 fps shy of H110. So will Universal. Can't go wrong with either.

hm, must be me. I find the consistent push of H110 more comfortable. Guess that is why there is more than one powder lol

for a 240 grain projectile run 23-25 grains of 266 or H110. This will provide you with a true 44 magnum load.

Jesus. No effing kidding 23 - 25 grains of H110 behind a 240 grainer is a full power .44 mag load. What, did you read your first reloading manual today?
Thanks for coming by to share that bit of obscure wisdom. Surely no one here is even remotely familiar with that recipe.
