A nice 8 pointer only 15 yds away....

As I read this, and looked at the pictures above... I absolutely gained new value for the hunter orange.

Private property, 23 miles to nearest road behind where I was shooting, had been there for two days so I know no one had snuck passed the house poaching, etc... I 100% knew I was shooting deer fur.

However I do see where you are coming from. But don't think for a second I didn't know WHAT I was shooting at.

Not aimed at you personally... Just that I can see how someone could be shot at like that on public land for example.

This is something I feel like I can never adequately get across to newbies on here that start "First hunting rifle?" Threads. Ontario guys that have never been hunting have this illusion of frequent 300 yard shots, when in reality, the pics above are much more indicative of the typical shot an Ontario hunter will need to be prepared for.

Western boys ask "Why the hell would anyone choose to hunt with an RFB over a scoped full length rifle!?"

^ that's why.

First time in my life that I've sighted a hunting rifle in dead on at 100 yards.

That is an East/West distinction... in the east we name bucks by all points displayed... in the west it is usual to count one side of the most typical beam.

And to be fair the eastern way makes more sense, given odd counts 3x4 etc. We'd over credit it as a four, you guys would say it right at seven.

BUM that's terrible. You're always welcome here where 200-300 is preferred.

While that makes sense 9 times out of ten, I still use MPBR for a 2" radius... usual about 2" high @ 100... you should too, and pretend you are still out West with an atypical short shot...

Where does the notion that west of Ontario is all bald ass prairie? Ever wondered what's on the other side of the Rockies? A #### tonne of bush, that looks just like the bush in Ontario.

I totally agree, you guys out east are on a flat prairie compared to the coastal mountain rain forests of the west coast chasing Black Tails

That's why I shoot a 7600 with a low power variable. I may get a 200+ yard shot less than 1% of the time. The area I hunt most often gives me 125 yards max, measured with a rangefinder, and I haven't shot an animal over 50 yards. Ever.

I saw a buck at 125 yards last year before he disappeared, but harvested him the next day @57paces.

What's an RFB?

Keltec RFB (rifle, forward-ejecting, bullpup)
.308
26 inch overall length
18 inch barrel
Ejects shells out a port at the front so is ambidextrous.
Basically the perfect tool for the hunter that has to play both "hunter" and "hound dog" roles. Imho

Took a rangefinder with me to deer camp this year cuz this thread got me thinking about what some of the ranges I typically see really are. The TOP yardage of ANY of the stands I set up on this year? Fifty Eight friggin yards. I'm gonna trade my rifle for a long pointy stick.
