Picked up this one, 308 Win. Really nice shape. 22" barrel. Iron sights. Redfield 2-7 scope on it. Mauser type floorplate. Thumb cut-out on the left side of the receiver.
What model is it? Says "Safari CAL 308 W" on the top of the barrel. Thanks for your help.

You might see the word "SILE" stamped in the barrel channel - I believe most stocks were made for PH by SILE in Italy - is a Safari by Parker Hale, I suspect - from your words. Is at least two of us trying to figure out how PH labeled their products - is or is not a stamping about the model name on the left side of the receiver - the "thumb cut-out" suggests that was made from a former military receiver - is what PH did at their start - make decent "hunting rifles" from SILE stocks and WWII German Mauser receivers - if it "shoots good", is likely a pretty decent rifle.

Thanks guys. Yes Sile is stamped in the barrel channel. The action is a large ring intermediate length Mauser action. #### on open and about 8.5" long. The trigger is military like, two stage and breaks at 4-5#.

From OP pictures - appears to have "left side" up / down two position safety on original military bolt shroud - FN in Belgium made some similar - was USA makers who did same, but on right side - was a way to enable relatively low scope mounting with a Mauser action - but then loose that "third" - middle - position by doing so - the cocking piece often has a hole through it - to allow for a pin or wire - to enable bolt dis-assembly with fingers - like an original military Mauser did.

Original Mauser 98 required loading into the magazine - in order feed a round into that chamber - were not made to be "single loaded" - "controlled round feed" only. Some sporter rifles had front end of that extractor ground to "snap over" a chambered shell - so will be worth your while to find out about that, on that rifle, before you "need to know" - with an original military extractor - not going to close that bolt on a chambered "single load" - cartridge would need to be snapped into the magazine first, and fed into the chamber from there - is part of what "controlled round feed" was about.

Good plan. I will shoot it to determine the function of the crf on a round not fed from the magazine. Interestingly, you can still see the faint receiver markings of the original Mauser manufacturer. But I cannot decipher them. This rifle reminds me of a Husqvarna 4100 that I have in 30/06. I like finding nice old stuff.

I own a Husqvarna 4100 in 7x57 - a good description that I read was that it had many or most m98 features, yet was in a m96 foot print - but is NOT an m98 - was pretty much a very nice shorter barrel sporter made by Husqvarna - I think similar or identical to various 1600 series Husqvarna designed actions.

In later years, PH did designate their rifles 1000, 1100, and 1200 if I remember correctly. The 1000's had not so nice stocks, the 1100's were similar to yours, and the 1200's had the rosewood fore ends and pistol grips caps. As mentioned, a fairly safe bet that rifle predates that... PH is a lot like Sako that way. Never say never. It is most likely to be identified and understood to be an 1100 Safari.

The proof mark on the bottom of the barrel. Can you date the rifle based on this?

I think this was a VZ24 Czech action before PH got their hands on it. Based on the mostly scrubbed receiver markings. Floorplates and bolts the same as well.

Nice rifles. I had a safari 308 with a Lyman peep on it when I was a kid. It had a factory detachable magazine which wasn’t very good. Lots of feeding issues. I think a lot them were made with Spanish Santa Barbara action? Not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing but I really liked mine.

Did you refinish that stock? Looks mint!

The SB receivers came later. They were good actions as well. Detachable mags are popular with some people, hence why PH offered them. - dan

I was going to mention that it sure looks like a Sile stock! LOL
The made some fantastic stocks for sure .

What we have found - from various old PH catalogues, Canadian catalogue sales ads, etc. - by the time PH made the 1000, 1100 and 1200 - at least one parts listing shows identical part numbers for all three models - except for the wood stocks - and most every version (of 1000, 1100 and 1200) seemed to have been made in either a "clip" (detachable magazine) version, or a hinged floor plate version. A bit of mystery for me to reconstruct the dates and "line-up" for the various "Safari" models - was for sure "Safari Super" and "Safari De Luxe" at some points - I have or had example of each - both had the "soldered on" scope bases - not drilled and tapped for base mounting screws..
