A NP-22 Review.

Hi folks. I think I've stumbled unto to something in regards to the horrid trigger pull. Please read my snippet about my np34 assembly swap in the beginning of the review.

so would you recommend one or not?? how horrible is horrible for the trigger? im interested in picking one up

The trigger is quite bad. It is a lot worse than the NP-34 and they pretty much use the same assembly. I've ordered some wolf springs to see if that will improve anything. I will post updates when I play with them a bit at the range.

Single action pull is not that bad, but not that great either. It is the double-action pull which is the grimy and heavy. I'm also thinking of a short reset trigger, even with my big paws it is quite a mission to pull in that last bit to break the sear on DA.

All in all, I think it is a decent purchase, again, if you are not stuck up on the rail I would go for the NP34. It is a whole lot more pistol for the same price. The NP-22 looks like it will tick if you fiddle with it.

I was considering the NP-34, but they are sold out at Marstar :(

At the same time, it would be nice to have a rail and I plan on shooting mostly SA, so it might not be so bad in my case, but keep posting updates, very interested in the modifications/improvements

I took mine out for the first time on the week-end. I’m not sure if it is my reloads, my cast bullets or the gun, but I had lots of FTFs and FTEs. The ammo seems to work fine in my CZ75 and NP20. Can somebody chime in on the cause? I have to go get some factory ammo to try.

try it with factory ammo first, if there's still a problem then it might be the firearm. I remember my norinco 1911 would jam with reloads until i realized the bullets werent seated deep enough for the chamber (you can also take the barrel out and put the ammo in to see if it fits properly in the chamber)

Great review! Love the amount of photo's and the detail you put into it.

I wouldn't worry to much about some of the machining that looks rough. I have an older Sig 226 as my duty pistol and It's rough in some areas as well.

Well gents. The Wolf springs have arrived.
I've played with the extra power recoil springs but I have yet to get the mainspring housing apart. Even He-man would probably have trouble with that sucker.

Looks like i'll need the tool in the youtube video below. What is that tool? The thing that he uses to compress the mainspring? Looks like a plumbing tool of some sort. Does anyone in scarborough have one, that they would be willing to lend out to butcher this poor NP-22 some more?

So far the springs look like they are fully compatible.
Only more testing will show this though. Stay tuned.
I'll do a proper write-up soon.

Just got my NP-22 yesterday. I would agree with 1895GS's review pretty much to a T. Trigger pull is awful, but i'm hoping this will improve with time. Fit and finish seem to be getting better with each Norinco I see - My first was an older-style 1911 Commander, then I traded it for a 1911 Sport Model. Both had very rough machining marks on the inside of the slide and frame, and the finish overall was rough.

My NP-22 has the usual thin Norinco blueing job. While you can still see machine marks - mine shares the marks in the same places at the NP-22 in the review - I'm impressed with the improvement over the 1911 in terms of smoothing out rough areas. Most of the gun is pretty smooth to the touch. Fit and finish aren't spectacular, but I'm not dealing with the genuine article. I had to trim the Sig grips to fit in the Norinco frame, but the end result looks very nice, and I like the look of the new grips.

No range report yet but I plan to shoot it soon enough :) I may even blast + arma coat it, once i learn how to strip it completely

Just use a correctly sized screwdriver. There is a slot under the mainspring housing to insert it. Just be carefull when you do so, that spring it under a lot of pressure.

I got a Sig Sauer armorer tool from Brownells a while ago (I don't know if any site sponsor holds it now, they didn't back then). It has reversable heads and has all the "points" you need to "almost" fully disassemble a SIG pistol. There are some smaller pins where you need a really small punch (for the hammer stop pin) but with that tool you can pretty much detail strip it 98%.

I'm talking about stripping the the actual mainspring assembly.
I do not see any slot for anything on it.
Maybe it differs from a real SIG, I don't know.

I have put 500 Wolf 9mm TMJ rounds through my NP-22 without a single FTF FTE...

I got that far.
I took the mainsrping out of the frame.
But now I don't know how to take the bloody thing apart,
if I do manage to take it apart will I be able to put it back together.
That thing has a lllllllloooooooooootttttttttttt of pressure on the spring.

Actually the new style hammer spring perch also uses a much shorter spring than the old style system.

I personally just used a set of leatherman pliers and firmly grasp the plate the shaft goes through and bring it up and over the lugs.

Also, it is important to remember to decock the pistol before trying to remove the hammer spring.

After disassembly I would say internally the NP22 is identical to the old style P226, the only issues I had is a couple of pins were tighter than their sig counterparts, meaning I needed a punch instead of just using the end of one of the springs to push them out.

After cleaning and greasing, the trigger and all moving parts greatly improved on the NP22, from new.

Great review!! Although I am not necessarily in the market for one, it is great to have a good review to read, instead of a bunch of posts about how "the Norinco is no good...blah, blah, blah". Thanks for the effort!!:)

Got Sig grips installed on Nork NP-34
I don't have any Norinco markings on it, just SN, the only norinco logo was on the grips.
Now no one will know :)
