Looking through all these pictures of m14 stocks..

I have a question..

my friend has an m14 w/ 2 stocks that doesnt have any of the metal on one of the usgi stocks AFTER the action..

He showed me him taking it down and transporting it to another stock and the metal went with the m14!

is this normal?

yea, i don't get it either- the only metal aft of the action is the buttplate and it's accompanying hardware- which a recoil pad would take care of- basically if i read this right, a couple of nuts and bolts and you're in business- it's common to replace the buttplate with a pad for whatever reason- some folks don't like the recoil?- and some find the stock too short- either way no big deal

Depends on the stock. USGI WOOD stocks usually have metal. USGI Synthetic don't. (I'm talking stock liner here) On the USGI FG or Synthetic there is no need for a stock liner. Are you talking about the butt plate or the stock liner?

okay.

the piece of metal in question goes OVERTOP of the barrel.. oh god its hard to describe.

Picture the TOP wooden part of a garand..

that part.

sure sounds like the handguard- i don't think i've ever even had mine off the barrel and that's 30 years- and that's before the action, not after, the action being the part that holds the bolt and where the cartridges go in- there's nothing on top after the action- also commonly called the receiver- from the front- flash hider, front sight, gas plug, gas system( yea, i know there's more to it but i don't want to type it all) then handguard, then HANDGUARD RETAINING CLIP, ( the handguard is secured by one of the gas collars on the front and this clip at the rear) action or receiver, trigger goup- that takes you to the pistol grip- after that there's only the buttplate- you normally start off at the barrell and work your way back- funny how you remember the chants after 35-40 years- that's how long since basic
