A piece of 8x57 JS snuck in my .308 die

So, got x100 once fired S&B .308 from InterSurplus and while sizing, I guess a piece of 8x57 JS found its way in to the lot.

I mean, it fit the #2 shell holder and entered the die but I knew something was off as midway through sizing this particular piece was a heavier draw despite case lube. Imagine my surprised upon removal. lol.

Who knew brass was THIS malleable. Anyways, you think if I use my .308 trimmer to bring the neck down, it would work? J/K. I obviously wouldn’t. Can’t imagine how thin the case wall must be. I’ll keep it as an anomaly like my upside down 1oz. Foster slug from the Remington factory.

Luckily, InterSurplus included x104 pieces in my x100 order, so I ain’t mad.

The neck might be too thick because you pushed the shoulder back, other than that there's no reason why it shouldn't work.

Many years ago, I wondered if a 30-06 case could be resized into a 6.5x55. It can. I only made one.
Looks even funnier than yours (before trimming).

I make 3006 into 8x57, old 8x57 gets made into 308. Aneal and trim close to the right length first, or pull out the decaping rod is a must.

I bet it would work.
Similar to forming 8x57 from 36.06, they just need trimming after forming.

The 8mm Mauser (8x57) is the parent cartridge for the 30-06 and the entire 308 family of cartridges, even the 45 auto has the same case head dimension.
No reason why it wouldn't work.

I use 30-06 and 270 win. cases to make 8mm Mauser, even 7.63 Argentine brass, which is not that common.

not that great of an idea as the 6.5 Swedish has a different case head size than the 30-06.

Everyone does. Have you seen how it is made? Sizing an 8mm to 308 is nothing compared to the drawing and forming process used to make cases.

I only did on case to see if it could be done. Never loaded / fired it; never even trimmed it to length.

Made many 308win cases this way from almost every .473 rimmless x57 and 06 cases. Found occasionally neck turning is required. Depending on chamber specs and wear. As the brass thickness increases from neck to base.

Made 6.5x55 cases from 30-06 too. As a proof of concept. Incase brass became scarce. Worked okay but only tried one firing of maybe 20 rounds. Lyman reloading manual warns against this. Cases bulged but did not rupture. Loaded to minimum charge. Shot them in a sako. Would not attempt in a m94 or 96 action

Shortening, necking up, necking down are all standard practices. Ordinarily, .308 would not be formed from other cases because it is so widely available.
I needed some 7x57 for a couple of Boer Mausers. Used .270 as the parent case. Most any case with an '06 sized head, longer than 57mm would work.
