a (possibly) dumb TAR-21 question...

I'm getting the itch to pick up another rifle, and have had my eye on a bullpup for a while. I'm leaning towards the Tavor (as the title suggests) but there's one thing that's confusing me. Looking at Al Flaherty's site I see that it's chambered in .223 Rem, but is "5.56x45 rated", however on the IWI site it says chambered in 5.56x45mm. Which is it, or what am I missing?

It is definitely 5.56.

As I recall it's stamped .223 rem for import purposes. Perhaps someone else can shed some light or add to this.

I do own one and had the same question.

From what I've read the land (non-rifled section of the chamber) on a rifle chambered in 5.56 nato is roughly double that of a rifle chambered in .223 rem. if you fire a 5.56 out of a .223 chamber bad things "may" happen.

Aren't they the same bullet, just 5.56 is the military name?

There CAN be headspacing issues between 5.56 and .223 ammo. Plus the ammo pressure is different (5.56 is hotter)

BUT, from what I hear ALL newer-ish European made guns are designed to fire all 5.56 and .223 ammo. Their version of "SAMMI" spec basically rates 5.56 and .223 as the same thing so all chambers must be cut to accept both.

Now the Tavor is obviously not European, but it's the same deal, they treat .223 and 5.56 as the same thing so their chambers must be cut to accept both interchangeably (AKA a 5.56 chamber)
