A question about black bear hunting, hopefully some guides can chime in

Oh glad to hear it, I thought I'd be ostracized for even asking, why not? Not to derail the thread, 375 H&H min sounds bat .... crazy to me. *shrugs* I've also had no close encounters with a *large* bear in the bush either.

My worst encounters in the "Bush" have always had more to do with cougars than bears... ;)

Big track, but it slid a lot too

Not really, although I can see how you might have thought so, the mud on the deeper side of the track was softer, which is what produced the illusion. If the tack had been made from a sliding paw, the toes and the ridge behind them would not have been so well defined. You can see the tracks from my 90 pound German Shepherd at either end of the track, between the track and the rock; her track hardly marked the ground. We jumped that bear in the willows an hour or so before we came across that track, and he was a healthy size.

I'd hunt black bears with a bow no problem. Grizz brown or polar bears I'm sticking with rifles. I know archery gear will easily kill them but I'd feel more comfortable with a rifle just in case they don't take to being stuck with a sharp stick to well. Black bears tend to run away when hurt. I've never hunted the others but from what I hear they may run at you.
