A co-worker of mine noticed this evening that black bears within Foster Creek, have differing color ears tags, positioned on the inside of ear.

Is this specific to only the bears within this general area??

Edit: I placed this in the hunting sub-forum to get an informed responce only. We are only working up here, and not hunting obviously.

Colour may not mean anything. Ive not worked specifically with bears in Alberta, but I do have some experience with animals in other provinces and extensive experience with tagging fish. Tag colour as often as not means nothing.

If it does mean something, it could be varied. Timeframe of tagging, location (as you noted), ###, really could mean anything, and give the bios/techs working on them information from afar without having to drug the bear to read the tag.

In ontario, ANY wild animal that is drugged gets a tag that indicates as such, and we are advised not to eat it for a period of one year.

I had a suggestion from someone that perhaps these marked bears were troublesome critters, and marked thusly before being transported here.

It was also suggested that no-one associated with officialdom would ever admit to this in public.

interesting if true

The U of A has a ongoing study of black bears in the CLAWR.
Alberta does not really "relocate" black bears.

I have to ask you folks more informed than myself on the subject, having grown up in Whitecourt I heard a lot of talk about "problem" bears being relocated to the area around the Bovar plant near Swan Hills is that actually the case?
