I bought two new 597s to use as training guns on the CFSC. Students keep knocking the extractors out with user induced jams. I wonder how often this happens overall.

Never for me either. I did have the extractor replaced under warranty shortly after I bought the gun new and it fixed all my problems. All has been well for many thousands of rounds since.

When novices ride the bolt handle when chambering a cartridge or don't pull the bolt handle hard enough to eject a cartridge, they often create a jam with the cartridge knocking around in the feed path. I've now had extractors get knocked out four times. When I called Remington to order the tiny (easily lost) plunger that sits on the ejector spring, the person answering the phone in the parts area commented that her extractor had fallen out as well. At Lebarons one of the guys behind the gun counter said they had frequent complaints about 597 extractors falling out.
