A question for Remington fans

When I bought my 40XBKS many years ago it was $1600.More recent prices are in excess of $2000 for many models. If I really wanted a high end 700,I would rather have a rifle built on a 700 action for the price.

I bought a number of Remington 40xb repeaters in 223 and 308. It took about two years to receive them, but it was worth it. McMillan did all of the stocks and that took about a year.....so it is all about $$$$$$$$$$$ and time waiting. McMillan had the steel winchester trigger housings to complete.

I wouldn't discount the remington custom shop too quickly, what they supply is a known quality. a lot of the gunsmiths around that profess to be competent could actually end up handing you a very expensive problem. The only reason that I wouldn't have the custom shop do the work for me is that I insist on the gentry 3 position safety being installed on the 700 action, and Remington, of course, would not do such a thing.

I would trust SOME of the gunsmiths on this board above and beyond any thing the Remington custom shop 'gunsmiths' put out. Plus you would get a good custom barrel and trigger of your choice for less.

Didn't say that all of the private gunsmiths where poor quality, but Remington has quality standards for it's custom shop that have to be met before they go out the door (this doesn't say that all Remington rifles are quality firearms). Even a good gunsmith; if he gets too busy, may let his quality slip. Also, I don't know that I would personally feel comfortable shopping for a smith over the internet.

Does the good remington come with controled feeding and a proper extracter.
Just wondering about this because I've never had a Remington (Model Seven, 760/7600, or 700) that would fail to feed or extract with proper loads and all the ones I've owned have not been the good ones.

The remington custom shop rifles are not worth anywhere near the asking price of $3000!You could buy a used rem 700 for $600have a gunsmith true and square the action, lap the lugs and install a sako extractor and install a top quality $700 barrel, add a mcmillan stock and still have about $500-$600 left over and have exactly what you want, that is of higher quality then any rem custom shop.I have had a few rem custom shops, none were worth the then $1200-$1500 asking price let alone double that!

IMO they're not really custom, if you have to pick off their list. Its not like you can pick your stock, barrel contour, length, etc. So why bother anyway...
