A question for the 870 gurus

Hi to all

My adult youngest son was asking me about shotguns the other day and we wound up going through the safe for a bit. I took my almost new (150 or so rounds) 870 Express out and showed him a few things; naturally we both cleared the SG before anything else.

Cycled normally and he decided it was what he wanted, and we had a 12 Gauge snap cap in place for our little discussion. When I cleared it again to return it to the safe, I felt the fore end hesitate for a minute and then open normally. One piece of plastic/nylon fell out of the ejection port.

Aw crap...

Anyway, I opened the action up and removed the trigger group, Could not find anything that looked like a piece had broken off of. Looked at the snap cap; nope. Looked at the other snap caps thinking this piece might have broken off from one of them, and decided to fall out later. Nope.

Back to the trigger group with a spark plug viewer (magnifier); still nope.

Pulled the aftermarket ATI pistol grip stock off, and the second piece fell onto the floor. OK...

The two pieces match, and it sort of looks like a bushing or detent at the end of a spring, for example. About 5/16 or 3/8 inch diameter, with ragged edges like it was the end of a tube or bushing of some kind.

So after the biggest part of an hour looking at everything (including the stock) I see no indication of what this might be. Watched a couple of 870 trigger group videos looking for anything that might resemble these bits. Nope.

Anybody got any good ideas???

When you say ATI pistol grip do you mean front or rear?

I have a rack of 870s and cant figure for a part that looks similar so Im thinking has to be part of the stock.

Otherwise if you say the mag tube spring front retaining thingy looks like similar material could it be from the inside of that piece?

My guess is it’s part of the stock, some of them have adapters. You could try reinstalling the stock and see if it’s loose.
Does the the stock bolt fit through the broken pieces?

Is it the ATI top folding stock you have? Might be the detent that holds the stock open. There should be a spring associated with that.
No idea how this broken part ended up in the ejection port, but certainly isn’t anything belonging to an 870.

No. The hole in the two pieces is less than 1/8”.

There is a spacer between the stock and the receiver, made of the same material. I have looked at that several times because it closes off the back end of the receiver.

The broken pieces look a lot like the stock material but repeatedly searching even with a strong light gives no indication.

well it has to be off the aftermarket stock as there is nothing like that in a stock 870 shot gun, at least the older wingmaster ones.

I am not all that familiar with the parts and pieces of the trigger group, but I can’t see a centering bushing or anything similar that would be able to break free. Everything else on the gun is steel(and this is an express), so by process of elimination I am starting to agree.

I guess I will go through the ATI website and see what I can find; then maybe enough 00 buck to turn my shoulder blue. If there is a problem it will show up.

Nothing in the 870 trigger group resemble that part nor in the whole gun lol

Must be from aftermarket stock or your son played a joke on you.

I had an instructor in a strip and assemble class sneak a few extra parts into the pile when you weren't looking. Sneaking them into the action is next level

I'd just put a Regular stock back on it or find a Knoxx recoil stock . some stocks are made very poorly . I like OEM . Knoxx stocks work good . I hope you resolve this . to me it looked like the follower and they are black sometimes . had one break one time and it was black . replaced it with a solid one .
