Is it considered poor form to buy your 18 year old daughter a used firearm as a Christmas present? Specifically a Rem 700 in .308 with a short barrel because its handy for a slight girl to shoot. I don't have a specific rifle in mind, but she has spent some time behind my M40a1 replica/clone and its pretty heavy for her. She does well with it but has a hard time lifting/ carrying it.

Any input is appreciated. A medium length barrel in a McMillan stock would be perfect for her, but as a deadbeat dad who put things off til now that probably isn't in the cards.

I've had both a sac sd tactical with a 20" barrel and now a 5r gen 2 with a fluted 24" barrel. I'd have to check specs but I dont think there was a huge weight difference. Definitely more manageable than a regular heavy barrel. I've had 4 different 700s and the 5r gen 2 is my favorite by far and I had a gen 1.

My wife has a strict policy. No firearms under the tree. It gets interesting. Santa put a pellet gun under the tree. Must not be a firearm. There was a 20g youth shotgun leaned up against the wall behind the tree. So lesson leaned. Put Santa’s name on it. Stick close to the kids for the next few days. Hard for her to blame me in front of the kids. Santa gets cursed out from time to time.

Great gift idea, new or used.

But would a short barreled .308 be the best choice for a "slight girl"? Might not a good .223 be something she could shoot more often and more comfortably?
A really good set of hearing protectors might be a good idea as well.

I don't see how it is. You don't buy them a brand new off the lot car, when they first get their license.

No I don't buy them new cars. I have a long list of ####ty old cars I've bought my kids in the past. But I will say this, my kids have always treated firearms a whole lot better than the cars they were given access to.

Was just thinking something short and handy for her. Haven't really looked into all the options.

My wife has come around. I am giving guns to all of my nieces/nephews this year, bows to my youngest two kids (they already have rifles). My son is getting all the firearms he helped himself to from my safe earlier this fall, so that just leaves my oldest daughter.

Good point. The M40 definitely has some weight to it, a lighter version may not feel the same. That being said, she loves shooting and has never shied away from anything she has had the opportunity to shoot. She has good hearing protection, would like to get her a rifle of her own.

She does enjoy shooting .223, but has told me she's only interested if its an AR.
