A question of etiquette....

Remington 600

Gave my youngest a Remington 600 in 308 to go caribou hunting with when he was 12. Put a good recoil pad on it, started off with 130gr loads and he ended up taking the biggest caribou in camp with a 150gr load. The nice thing about the 600, besides handy and accurate is that they hold their value.Oh yeah, he's 30 now and still loves it

My 2 cents:cheers:

Page 3 and nobody has mentioned 6.5 Creedmoor yet.
Flatter shooting out to 1,000, less felt recoil.
Cheaper to reload due to cheaper components.
What’s not to love.

My wife has a strict policy. No firearms under the tree. It gets interesting. Santa put a pellet gun under the tree. Must not be a firearm. There was a 20g youth shotgun leaned up against the wall behind the tree. So lesson leaned. Put Santa’s name on it. Stick close to the kids for the next few days. Hard for her to blame me in front of the kids. Santa gets cursed out from time to time.

my wife has a similar policy. I got one kid a red ryder a few yrs ago went Ok but the boxing day discussion was nothing more than BB guns. They get outdoor clothing and pocket knives. Santana got me electronic ear protection last year. but real guns arent brought by Santa (or me at Christmas)

They can have them. get one for a birthday present, or just because it was good deal on a Wednesday afternoon. But not at Christmas.

If that the only real concession i need to make, i think im doing pretty good.

PS: i took 15 yrs to get there for you fresh guys.

to OP
it feels like there are two questions? (maybe im reading wrong)
1) is it OK to gift Used vs New
2) is Christmas good time give firearms

For used i gave my oldest an SKS (back when they were $200) day he passed his PAL. he was over the moon. he didn't care at all that it was used.

for Christmas, you know your family... ?!?!?

A really good set of hearing protectors might be a good idea as well.

x100!!

at 18 i was invincible, used to shoot 30-06 in gravel pit with no hearing protection.
why would i spend what little money i had on that when i could spend it on more ammo (or beer, but not at the same time)

but if i already owned it i would have probably used it

No I don't buy them new cars. I have a long list of ####ty old cars I've bought my kids in the past. But I will say this, my kids have always treated firearms a whole lot better than the cars they were given access to.

So I don't see the problem with giving them a used gun. Dad gave me a 1911 for Xmas one year. I wasn't like take it back it was used, I really enjoyed it, and was excited to shoot it. The fact the next day we decided to load up some 45 ACP and hit the range. So it is more about the memories than the was it used.

My wife has come around. I am giving guns to all of my nieces/nephews this year, bows to my youngest two kids (they already have rifles). My son is getting all the firearms he helped himself to from my safe earlier this fall, so that just leaves my oldest daughter.

Goddamn, what do I have to do to get on your Christmas list?

But to address the question, if your daughter is as practical as she sounds then I am sure she will understand the value of a good deal so long as the rifle isn't beat to crap. And .308 is a fine calibre, and it sounds like she has plenty of experience with firearms already and doesn't need to start off at a .243 or something similar.

My wife of 38 years bought me a used rifle for Christmas when we were dating.
Before that she loaned me the money to buy a SW model 27.

Enough said...

Used firearms are perfect gifts.

Might think about something with less recoil though
260 rem is what this old guys shoulders like now...

The question wasn't about whether or not a firearm is appropriate for Christmas, but whether or a used firearm was. Guns are fine under the tree in my house. I want to go with .308 as I load for it, and and she seems comfortable shooting it. Thanks for all the suggestions.

A member here contacted me with the offer of a rifle that fits the bill nicely, when it arrives I'll post a picture of it (if he doesn't mind).

Perfect gift IMHO my wife bought me two a few years ago and put them under the tree Christmas day..

I personally do not see an issue of guns under the tree, new or used and most gun owners would agree. I think if it is something someone really wants than so be it. The question of etiquette (and respect) should be directed at one's spouse in making sure it is 100% OK to do that on that particular day. Some of you have eluded to this in their posts and you get it. Harmony on Christmas morning is a must IMHO.

They are addictive! I just rebarrelled my Mohawk to 6.5 Creedmoor---Thrilled!

When I was 16 my father took every one of his rifles out of the safe, laid them on his work bench, and gave my brother and I the choice of whatever rifle we wanted. Yes, that can be a scary proposition...I might just as easily have chosen the 7mm Weatherby that he had custom built in 1961. In a strange twist of fate both my brother and I chose a 30-06...Mine a Sako AIII and my brother an A-Bolt Stainless Stalker (don't feel bad for him...he still had another 30-06 to fall back on).

Maybe that would be a better solution to your problem, and would mean a hell of a lot more to her in the long run.

My dad gave me a used gun once. What a crappy gift!!

Nothing wrong with a used firearm as a present as many used guns look as new when properly cared for . Not sure about a 308 though as it would depend on what she would be using the rifle for . 308 ammo can be expensive for a range gun , but a 308 would be a great choice for an all around hunting rifle .

I'm actually down to just 3 centerfire rifles: my ATRS .308, Ruger No.1 45/70, Ruger M77 .270. This is why I'm buying one.
