A question of Precision

so the pros here suggest getting a .22 LR gun to practice at ranges up to 200 yards before i invest in a higher powered rifle?

any suggestions on particular Models of .22 LR rifles/scopes?

thanks again

I would look for a Bruno #4 or any Anschutz (CIL's are great). The new CZ 452 Varmint and Rem 541's are great. You might need to change the stock to work off bags better. No big deal as recoil is not a factor. Bed and tune that trigger as well as possible.

Buy a bunch of QUALITY match ammo. Expect to pay at least $5 a box and don't cringe if the rifle needs $15 per box to shoot its best. That is still three times cheaper then low priced match quality centerfire.

Even reloads cost around $1 per bang.

I would look right away at the scope you plan on owning long term. May as well enjoy the best glass you can afford. If really on a budget, the Elite 3200 10X is a superb scope for dirt cheap. Burris sig rings with inserts so you can adjust for the drop.

Shoot and shoot and shoot.

Some will consider it a joke to use a 22LR. Just ask them to shoot your rig. Odds are if they are use to high velocity, high BC cartridges, they will do very poorly with the 22LR at 100 or 200yds.

It is the toughest LR cartridge to use...

PS black powder cast bullets would likely be worse.

Good advice from Jerry. In my opinion, and it has been mentioned many times in this thread, look at the CZ452 Varmint (heavy barrel). Russells Sports in Calagary has them for just over $400 plus tax and ship. Invest $15 in a Brooks trigger kit.

Here is Eric Brooks FAQ page, it will teach you a lot about the 452;

I'd suggest picking up a used Leupold with target turrets on the board here, they can be found as low as $400 and are worth every penny.

These guns are a blast!

Indeed ;)

You'll have a ton of fun with your accurate .22 vs learning on a .308. Once you're hitting targets at 200 all the time with your .22, pick up something like the Remington 700VS that myself and others have suggested in this thread. You won't 'outgrow' the .22, or the .308 later. Even the best shooters still recommend lots of .22 practice, and you can shoot so much more of it.

Hi: 84. I would recommend a Rem 700 I saw some at www.ellwoodepps.com for $399 fine actioned gun, and you can more upgrades down the road than anything on market today. and you don't like it the action alone will bring you
$350 all day long and maybe more.
