A Question on Length of Pull

When fitting up there's no one 'right' or 'wrong' fit. It's according to your shooting style, body type, and etc. What is known generally as the 'proper' fit nowadays is basically industrial marketing pushing a method of production that's cheap and easy. Doesn't make it wrong, but the fit only really works when shooting prone. If I don't use a fair bit of drop from line of sight, the butt of the gun sits with only the toe on my shoulder. If I use a 13.5 LOP on anything with recoil, I get a bloody nose from my thumb smashing my face.

Looking through my records the pitch on a Mauser factory sporter was 4.5 inch. The LOP on a MS was 14.5. Nobody can fault either company for being slack in their production -- they basically invented rifles. Likewise, Ralf Martini and his work falls into a realm of quality as distinct as the difference between a Bushnell and a Swarovski. Most gun facts were established by 1945, there's nothing new to invent.

Bottom line though is that gun fit is individual. If what you've got works, then great. But without a doubt proper fit is what makes a gun into your gun.

Guntech nailed it. When I was looking at the guns at William Larkin Moore a couple years back, I noted their really high end guns all had 15” LOP. The fella there said it was so people could cut the length and pitch to their preference. Some checker the butt, some skeleton them, others do a pad.
