I currently own a Remington .223 and a Browning .300 Win. Mag. I am looking to buy a rifle that would fit right in between the two, so I'm thinking of .260 Rem. There doesn't seem to be many different models available in catalogues too for this calibre. Any comments or suggestions?

you got it pretty much, 260 Remington

if you only shoot factory ammo you'd be better off IMO with either a 25-06 or 7mm-08 Rem

I'd personally go 280 or one of the 7mm's. 284 win, 7mm Rem Mag,etc, etc...

if he's already got a 300 Mag, there's no real point in owning a big seven as well

O.k. I see your point on the 7mm Mag even though the size of bullet will change option wise but the 284 Win would still be a good option over the 260.

why would the 284 offer anything more over the 260 Remington??

the difference between a 140 gr. @ 2750 fps and one at 2950 fps isnt alot, and talk about being a handloaders round, the 284 has one factory load. better hope your rifle likes it!

oh, and bolt actions are better than levers :D

Ouch, that hurt!!!

It's o.k. though, your young and some day you'll grow up and see the error in your ways!

Watch it now, respect your elders!!!

Thanks for your suggestions, first thought was 25-06 & 260. Wanted to try something different, the 260 if I start to reload or if not go with the 25-06. Up here, choice of available ammo is limited, got to make a special order if you want a particular cartridge or buy the maximum you could put in your luggage.

Why don't you look at something in a 270.

It fits in the middle of your 223 and 300wm.

I would think that you would be able to find factory ammo easy in R.I.

When I made this same decision a few years back, I chose the 308win. I load it mild and use it to start the kids on.

By selecting the 308 I am able to use the same bullets I load for my 300WM as well (150, 165, 180).

There is so many options, you may have to choose more than one rifle!

I just compared the cases for 25-06 & 260, the 25-06 has more capacity. I guess if I start to reload, it would allow more flexibilty to get an ideal load? I'll probably just go with the 25-06. Thanks again for your input.

6.5x55mm, or 260 Rem, almost the same but the 6.5 lends to the 160gr bullets better, as it is a long action. Mild recoil and lots of killing power in the 6.5mm caliber but if you don't reload than maybe the 25-06, 270 would fit the bill.

25-06 has more powder capacity but that really means little in terms of ease of finding a sweet load. I'd wager that the average 260 Remington rifle will outshoot the average 25-06.

270 WInchester might be your best bet if you're up in the middle of nowhere.

you have a pea bore (.223)...... and a small Medium bore (.30cal)

.25cal
6.5mm
.270 cal

whatever floats your boat. I would go to a .375 or bigger if it was me :D .300 mag is just a fast .308win so you really don;t own a big gun yet.... every one needs a bigbore :p

Tod is ri___ Tod is rig__ Tod is Righ_ Ah #### I can't say it . Just buy a 260 you will never regret it.
"oh, and bolt actions are better than levers " BULL My 88 was good for 6 mules and one whitetail so far (I have 3 tags left).I ended up using 100gr Hornady SP hits like the hammer of THor.

If you reload I am personally a big fan of the .264 Win Mag, it used to have a bad reputation as being a barrel burner but the new powders today and some barrel maintenance make it a good round in my opinion..........

I would also say the .260Rem is one of the best choice medium wieghts for all around hunting.... I do like the .25's as well and if your thinking coyotes to deer my favorite is the .25WSSM... way cool.
