A rifle between .223 & .300 Win. mag.

I shows 260 seems to be a winner, on second thought maybe I'll go with the 260 instead. 6.5x55 sounds interesting but not sure where to order rilfes as such. Still limited to well-known retail catalogues but there don't advertise but haven't contacted them for rifles not listed but for sure they should be able to get. This thread is helping alot. Thanks again.

if you got a postal address Im sure Wholesale Sports or Russell Sports or SIR can mail order you any rifle you want. also ammo and reloading supplies etc

I was just going to say 7x57, but RT beat me to it. It has mild recoil, shoots flat, can be loaded with 120gr for small game and 175 for big; it is a versatile classic.

I'd be thinking of something like the 7X57 Mauser or 7mm-08.

I vote 7mm-08 Rem if you don't reload +/or if you are going to start reloading. ;)

And the .260 Rem if you are going to start reloading. :D

Another vote for the .264 Win Mag. Very fast, very accurate and very fun to shoot. I've killed everything from gophers to moose with this calibre, it really can do it all.

Sorry Todd(and others) but the 260 doesn't even come close to this round.

264 Win Mag is nice but if you really want to reach out and touch someone Weatherby chambers the 257 weatherby in the Vangaurd.Light recoil and flat shooting.Only my 2 cents.

Not sure why you would want to go to .260 cal. It's not that common a cartridge. Brass and factory ammo would be in relatively short supply. If you want those ballistics the 6.5 X 55 would be a better choice. Lots of good brass available for it (Lapua and Norma for the best quality). Factory ammo in a variety of weights from well known suppliers. Military surplus ammo for cheap shooting. It offers nearly identical ballistics but with a much better supply of ammo and components.

if a guy is going to be hunting moose, Im sure he will be using his 300 Win Mag anyways, not a 264 Mag

for a medium bore rifle for deer, etc, at 'normal' hunting ranges, the 260 Remington has alot to offer, with light recoil, long barrel life, and low muzzle blast. something the 264 Winny cannot do.

.270 Winchester. Manageable recoil. Flat shooting. Quick death. I've shot a lot of animals with mine and they go down like they've been shut off with a switch. I also own a .260 but I still prefer the .270 over the .260. It just seems to have a little more oomph. My $0.02.
