A S&W snob tries a Ruger GP100

;)Guilty as charged:). I picked up the SP-101 in .22 LR from the estate of a shooting buddy that passed away a short while ago.

I thought if I could pick up a prohib GP-100 in SS and 357 Mag it would make a good match for the SP-101. Not that I 'need' it:redface:, more like just cuz:p.

Although single actions, there's a few more 'in the closet', starting with the most recent acquisition, SS convertable 4 5/8" Blackhawk 45 LC/45 ACP.

I'll start to thin things out one day,;)when the 'tsunami' called real old age gets closer, but it'll be a few years yet. I got the flattop as a shooter. A previous owner had some 'work' done to it so it isn't actually a desireable piece from a collectors standpoint. The topstrap had at one time been drilled and tapped for a scope mount I presume. That has been filled in. It was also refitted with a 'reworked' trigger/hammer unit, from a Super Blackhawk I believe, and while not original it has a trigger pull/let off compareable to the 'like breaking glass' trigger pull of a S&W. Best I've had in any Ruger. Last but not least, the grips, while Ruger staghorn are replacements for the original wood. Like I've mentioned, not collector piece but quite a shooter.

Interesting post, thx for the review.

I bought a GP100 a couple weeks ago at Proline. I went in to get a 10/22 and ended up buying the GP100 during a major impulsive breakdown moment.

I actually knew nothing about the gun at all, but I liked the looked and everyone needs a 357 IMHO. The more I read about it the more I like the decision.

Just waitning for my PAL to come through so I can start burning some ammo.

Cheers,

John

I bought mine to compete with in IDPA. Great shooter. I replaced the front sight with a green Hi-Viz FO. This sight makes picking up the front sight much faster for me.

My cylinder throats were extremely tight - I couldn't push a .356 lead boolit through them. A .358 reamer solved that problem. I shoot lead boolits and to tight of cylinder throats does not make for best accuracy. The forcing cone is cut at 5 degrees and I intend to have it cut to 11 degrees. A 5 degree cut wil lead to leading in the frcing cone when shooting LSWC.

Gun is more accurate than I can shoot so all is good there. If you buy one of these guns have the cylinder throats checked. Too tight of throats seems to be a Ruger thing.

Take Care

Bob

I think I got ya figured out now JP, your a revolver whore:eek:. Nice bunch of wheelguns :(.

:eek:Hey hey hey!! I hope this proves to you how much willpower I have. Concerning the GP 100 that was offered to me;), I waited patiently until 10:30am today, 10:30 I say, before I went and made the purchase! For me, that's willpower:redface::p. Here's a few quick pictures of the .22 LR SP-101 with its big brother, GP-100.

Well JP you can't blame us cause we got teflon underpants:p, that sh!t won't stick here. Seriously you waited what? 24 hours before giving in, thats monumental will power in my book.

I was hoping you'd understand:p. Not a bad little handgun. Feels about the same or of a size similar to the 19's and 66 I had but at the same time, 'feels' heavier.

At a local gun show recently I pick up a Bianchi holster, a #5BHL made for 38/357 S&W for $10.oo. As/the photo, it fits nicely. I'll have to get it to the range and at least make sure it goes 'bang':).

JP, I really like that SP101! I wish i could have one.

They're a handy size and I'll admit, it's starting to grow on me:). I had never even heard of them or was interested in something along that line until the family looking after the estate of an old shooting buddy offered it to me. It, like all Ruger revolvers, seems to be very 'skukum' and well made. ;)Time will tell.

GP 100s 4.2 inch = great wheel guns.

Bought a BNIB blued in 2010 then, bought another BNIB in stainless a few months later.

Put the older style wood-insert type grips on the blue and a handsome set of rosewood on the stainless.

They are definitely fine keepers.

Don't forget the grip insert pin (approx 3/8" by 1") when you replace the grips. These pins/ dowels are not supplied with the stock Hogue monogrip.

cheeers to all

The one I've acquired is an older blued 4" version. Question, in the inside bottem area of left side grip there is a recessed area that contains a solid pin, 5/64"x3/4". What is that pin for??
