A Savage/Stevens Question

Sharp shooters supply in the US has a great trigger for about $100 landed.

They are savage experts and have a couple trigger options, I ordered mine from there.

Was the Stevens 200 a centerfeed action? If so it will not fit the McMillan.
Measure the action screws CTC
4.275" short action
4.400" new centerfeed short action
4.522" intermediate length action, sometimes erroneously called a J series
5.062" long action

Not only does the wsm currently use what is known as a large shank, the bolt head is also different. What caliber is yours?

Unsub, you don't want to. Get a SSS or Rifle Basix Sav2 trigger.

There are 2 steals on scoped Savage heavys in the EE right now, snooze you loose.

unless you have the stevens already, you may be better off to find a savage in a WSM caliber to start with (either used, or in the EE) Most savage barrels in the WSM family are "large shank" as opposed to "standard shank" and have a bit larger diameter at the threads. It will also save you some coin in the bolt face/magazine mods area.

edit:Noticed you already figured that out, if you are after a long range precision rig, look at the 260 rem or 260 AI.

Will a Stevens model 200 short action caliber, such as a .243,7-08, .308 fit in a Savage model 10 FCP HS Precision stock? The gun it is off is a short action in .308. would it be a straight "drop in" replacement, provided the action screws are the same spacing?
 
do you reccomend bedding the entire recoild lug? I have heard suggestions of bedding everything on the recoil lug except the front of it, is this true? I have also read that you bed the barrel nut or do you recommend that?

I want the entire recoil lug to be supported by bedding. This is what handles all recoil forces and there is a forward motion as well. If there are any gaps, the forces may be transfered to the action screws. Not good for long term performance and flyers will creep up.

I do bed under the barrel nut and sometimes under the barrel if the barrel is a very heavy contour and long (28 to 30"). I want to take the load off the recoil lug and front of the action.

I sometimes have to build a 'dam' in the forend so the bedding can be built up under the nut/barrel.

After removal, I will chip/grind off the bumps that were formed from the slots in the barrel nut. Just ensures there is nothing hanging up the action when you reinstall.

Stuck a Rifle Basix Sav 1 in my Stevens. Bit tricky to set but once it's there it's very good. Prefer the Timney, but the RB can be had directly from them (they actually answer the phone when you call their toll-free number). No problems shipping to Canada. Good trigger, very adjustable.
 
I have a savage heavy barrel wsm in the EE if you are still interested in something like that as a project. its a good start, you can rebarrell it to 300wsm if that is what you are after
