"...looking for a plug for my Browning Auto 5..." Anything that works will do. A length of 1/2" wooden dowel, for example. Used a piece of tree branch one time when I got out and found I had left the factory plug at home.
 
I was teasing about the over-under guys starting the law. Who knows why it's in place. Pretty sure a raven or crow isn't a migratory game bird, but if I hunt them in BC I have to plug my gun, unless I hunt them with slugs, then I can pull the plug.
Every Province is different too, so make sure before you go out.

As for the auto 5 guy, get a length of dowell and cut it to fit. Make sure you can easily load 2, but not 3. If it's a tight fit to get 2 in, it'll be a pain when you're hunting.
 
I think the mag limit is unnecessary. If you will likely miss after 3 shots, you'll still miss after 10. The idiots will run out of ammo quickly and go home. I know many people in isolated regions that are hunting with more rounds in their shotguns and even semi-auto rifles with unpinned mags. (yes I know illegal). They aren't hunting careless, more convenient I think then having to reload in the field as often.

I understand completely. I mean why go through the bother and expense of purchasing licenses and tags, or even waiting for proper seasons. Poaching is far more convieniant...

Not sure what you mean by a dog hunter, but if there's dogs that'll drag a deer back to the truck I want one! JK. Hunting big game is way different than bird hunting. Anyone that doesn't put in effort to recover a wounded animal is pathetic.
Still think the 3 round limit for hunting is pretty lame. Think the 5 round limit for semi's is even worse.

We are both hunters and shouldn't even be debating about this. These silly rules are always splitting hunters and shooters apart.

Well I hunt and shoot. I feel that by shooting you improve on your hunt game.

3 to 5 seems fair to me for big game hunting. Of course the S-A 4 shot vs. The 5 shot bolt etc. seems weird. I guess they figure a S-A cycles faster so doesn't need a 5th?

Its just my opinion that if you need more than that you probably need more shooting practice. No animosity just opinion.

Of course I started hunting with a crossbow. You get used to inflicting a fatal shot first time since rarely is there a chance for a second shot.

I use the end of an old curtian rod.
Works great and will not hold moisture like a piece of wood will.
 
For my first 25 years of hunting I used a single shot shotgun.I found it taught me to take my time and make sure that every shot counted.Now I use a single shot muzzle loader.Last year I had about a 98% hit and recovery on grouse,one I clipped and wounded and after a couple of hours beating the bush I figured I'd never find it.The rest were just plain misses.Sure I have some doubles and pumps but those are just for cowboy action shooting and I haven't missed once yet in competition ,I just wish it was the same for my revolvers.Those that figure to grab a semi or a pump with a extended tube and spray lead are just hoping to hit something,no marksmanship in that!
 
Watched Tom Knapp pheasant hunting on TV, the bag limit was 3 pheasants so he only took three shotgun shells with him. He's a good shot and went 3 for three.

If the goose limit was 5, would you one shot guys only take 5 rounds?

And what about guys using 20 gauge guns, wouldn't they wound more than a 12 gauge?

I personally would take more than 5 in my pockets, way more, and I'd shoot at 1 till it went down.

I actually kill more birds and use less ammo than many guys do that shoot a 12, but I make sure my shots are within the range of both myself and my 20 gauge.
I have no problem taking a goose at 30 yards with 1oz of #2's

i also started with a single shot shotgun.really teaches a person to make first shots count.i hunt with a pump now and have no need for more than 3 shots.have gone 3 for 3 on ducks and geese over decoys.one flock of 5 geese a couple of years back left the decoys as a flock of 1 untill it came back looking for the rest.then it was a flock of 0.in this case went 3 for 3 and had time to jam 2 more into gun,dump bird #4 and swing on #5 but it was too far away.fill gun back to capacity,pull cover over myself and start calling.bird #5 swing down wind about 400 yards and comes back like pulled on a cord.dumped it when it tried to land on top of me.great way to limit out but it was the first flock of the day.stayed for about another hour /hour and ahalf.called in another 6-8 flocks of geese,some flocks of ducks(which i took 4 blacks out of) and 1 physco pheasant which was attacking my decoys when it bit the dust.i too can not understand why we are restricted to 3 if hunting big game with slugs and a rifled slug barrel.
 
I would like to see larger mag capacities for shotguns for upland hunting. I do a lot of chicken hunting and have ran into many flocks where a few more rounds in the tube would have been really nice!

It can be frustrating when you pump out your last spent shell and start to fumble for more ammo as that last bird starts to head bob and fly away!

Still have to follow the bag limit that is put in pllace to control the number of animals.
 
How does a mag limit stop overhunting? I still go out and get my bag limit when I go out, how does it matter if I shoot the fourth bird of one flock, or shoot 3 from one flock and 2 from another?

It is poaching to take more than your limit no matter how you slice it. Mag limits have nothing to do with upland. I could see if your duck hunting and wounding birds, buts a whole different animal all together, hence the different regs it falls under.
 
I was unaware that it was illegal or even frowned upon to shoot a flock of partridge. As far as I knew, if your limit was five, and you saw and shot five birds, you were acting according to the regulations.

Now here is some food for thought, consider the firearms one may use to hunt small game. They fall under rimfire and shotguns under #2 shot size. The shotgun is limited to 2+1 capacity. Rimfires on the other hand have an unlimited magazine capacity.

Both firearms are 100% legal (at least in my area) to kill my five 5 partridge. So why when I take my .22 LR out hunting with its 25-round mag does it put me at risk of "over-hunting"?

If I had an 8-round mag on my shotgun, doesnt mean I'm going to abandon all coherent thought and do a mag dump whenever a bird twitches it's head. It just means that if I come across a flock of say 4 birds, I may have a shot at that last bird if it sticks around long enough.

We argue this all the time whenever a high-capacity magazine thread comes up. Allowing more ammo to be in the gun doesnt make it any more powerful or more deadly. You just dont have to reload so often.

I suppose people would use a higher capacity magazine because it would be handy for those target rich environments when you wish you had that extra shot before you start fumbling for shells. This is of course illegal and I in no way support this behavour or engage in this activity. But I can see how one would be tempted to do so if one were so inclined to break the law.
