I think it was about thirty years a go a group of American hunters were caught with a
.30 cal machine gun mounted on their jeep here in Alberta.Since they were hunting moose,I suppose that you could conjecture that seeing as there were four of them that if they came across a flock of moose having the extra 96 rounds would ensure that each of them would be assured of getting a moose.

Let's not rely on the powers that be to prevent us from becoming criminals.
We are responsible enough to do it.
 
Easy, you dont dump 5 shots randomly into a covey of patridge! I dont know anyone who will just point at a mass of birds and fire until the gun is empty. Aiming still holds some value where I come from.

It should go something like this:

1. Walk up on 3 birds
2. Aim at the first bird, pull trigger, verify down
3. Aim at second bird if it is still there, pull trigger, verify down
4. Aim at third bird if it is still there, pull trigger, verify down
5. Collect birds and continue in this fashion until you have 5

I doenst get much easier then that. Isnt that part of hunting supposed to be about marksmanship and ensuring a quick and clean kill?? I thought it was.

I still dont see how the mag limit helps bird populations. If you packed enough chickens into a small enough area, you could kill over your limit with 3 shots. It is ridiculously unlikely, as doubles are legendary, and triples are unheard of.
 
You point a shotgun not AIM a shotgun.
Are you quite sure which pellets gotta go where? Don't expect to see the EXACT bird you were "AIMING" on the ground.

No, YOU don't dump 5 shots into a covey of birds, and I comend you for that, however I have seen guys fire all 3 shots into a covey and sometimes not dropping even a single bird! Had each shot connected and killed 2 birds per shot (which I have done) that would be 1 bird over the limit. All I'm saying is while you may be an ethical hunter, and hopefully there are more of you then them but make no mistake, there are plenty of them. There are slobs out there who pay no attention to rules or laws. It is because of them that we are where were at. And I have no issue with a magazine capacity while hunting birds. I agree it's silly to enforce that in say a slug gun, but I do understand why the CO's would enforce it if there is an open bird season.
 
Mag limits don't make ethics. Just like the rest of our dumb a$$ gun laws don't make angels out of gangbangers. But each to his own. If you'd rather think that some mag limit is the fount from which all conservation flows, be my guest. Me, I think it has more to do with a love for the wild, and recognizing our role in nature.

Poachers do shoot more than their bag limit. At the end of the day, I don't see a mag limit reducing the numbers of birds taken by a meat hog. I do beleive Migratory Bird Act mag limits were introduced by anti-s, as a way to make otherwise responsible sportmen accept another step on the slippery slope.

And with that, you are very wrong. The regulations we have today were brought fourth by hunters and sportsmen after market gunners with high capacity (and very large) guns almost decimated the bird numbers into obliviian. Bag limits were also introduced and today we have a very sustainable resource thanks to those regulation so many hate.
 
Can anyone confirm or deny for me that in Ontario there is a mag limit for upland hunting? Up until now I have just always used a SxS for upland and haven't had to even worry about it. But for next year I am hoping to use my Pump.

If anyone can provide some insight that would be helpful (especially if you can provide your sources)

No more than 3 shots combined, magazine and chamber. It's in the regs, and that's for hunting anything in Ontario.

I used to keep a couple of shells between the fingers of my left hand (I'm right handed) so I could reload quicker and not have to fumble for shells if things got fast and furious.

The 3-shot regs are part of the Migratory Bird Treaty between us and the U.S., so don't expect them to change anytime soon. The reason it applies to everything is that the C.O.'s don't want to listen to the excuse, " well, I'm not hunting ducks, I'm hunting partridge" or whatever. Just makes things simpler for enforcement.

We have a real problem here with over-population.

If anything, they should be handing out free shells to anyone hunting geese.
 
I could not agree with you more. We don't know what to do with them after the bag limit is done for everyone on the squad. They keep on flying. They are flying pests! Have you seen their stomachs when you gut them? They're always full of some stuff. It seems they would eat anything they can find on a poor farmer's field.

The three shot rule only applies to non-waterfowl in certain provinces, though, as pointed out earlier. Here in NB, I used to hunt bear with five slugs in my shotgun.

Good point re: keeping spare shells handy. I hunt one particular creek where you could crack off a ten round mag, were it legal. I started walking it with two shells in my hand plus three in the gun. It makes be a big difference, as opposed to fumbling through your pockets for the next shell, while black ducks fly all over the place.

I am going to have to disagree with you Askehece,

I think as hunters the vast majority of us understand why there are bag limits... It is to control populations and to ensure there are plenty of animals to hunt in the future. Bag limit and mag limits are completely separate issues. I can't speak for everyone but I know that I have the self control to only make ethical shots and stay within the bag limits. I don't need the government to hold my hand and tell me I can only have 3 shots total. Although since it is the law I will follow it.

I just don't see the connection between mag limits and bag limits as long as us hunters are responsible.
