A source for lead ??

Sounds like it makes a lot of sense to me... harder ball in a smooth bore would seem to be a better idea than pure lead, much like you don't want pure lead for buckshot. The reason for needing pure lead is totally absent in a smoothbore.
 
Local sites like Kijijji or Buy and sell, I look for old scuba equipment, sailboat keels (lead shot or solid), wheel weights are getting harder to find in Ontario, lead flashing from plumbing renos.
 
As others said the old roofing lead can be found at the scrap guys. The issue with that is that it can have lots of tar and other crap on it. I found a guy selling pure lead. It more money that raw scrap stuff but its already in one pound ingots packed 50 lbs to a carton. Very little fluxing needed and no smoke to speak of from other things on the lead. A lot of guys are fairly secretive where their lead sources are. I finally found a guy with a bunch of linotype, been looking for more of that for years, its getting harder to find in my area with all the small town newspapers gone.
