A specific question on AR stock and OAL

I searched the archived threads of the last 3 years and can see a lot of threads on OAL and stock questions, but I didn't come across this specific question. If there is an existing thread feel free to point me to it.

All the threads I found talked about if putting an AR stock tube on a shorty, that it is ok as long as the OAL is still over 26" after collapsing the stock slide. However most (if not all) sliding stocks can be taken off the tube without using tools, and in the case if with the tube alone is not longer than 26", does is then not violate the OAL rule?

Thoughts on implications? Options?

some believe aslong as its not a homebrew hack job and you use store bought parts and product OAL is not an issue, these people believe you can put a pistol grip on an 8.5" grizzly without any problems.
I however plan to abide by the OAL rule to keep it simple and it seems everyone knows that rule, a pistol gripped shotgun doesn't appeal to me, I just put a collapsible stock on my 12.5" and when fully collapsed it is 30" that is fine by me.

I understand the part about collapsing the slide and it is still longer than 26".
My question is: is the 26" OAL rule met in the case where the stock can be taken off the stock tube without tools? The scenario is once the stock is taken off, the shotgun with the bare tube then becomes less than 26", and can still be fired albeit with just the bare tube.
 
Fully collapsed the tube is usualy flush with the but pad. I still measured 29.5" with the stock removed from the tube. Very little change in oal, the 1/2" is probably from the added rubber butpad.
 
I know what you're describing NorlandGeese. I used to have the same debate with my 14" Fabarm and it did worry me a little. I never took flak for it at any range I shot at, but I never got dragged in front of the RCMP for an inspection either.

In theory, something like locktite on the threads of the buffer tube could help your case. But I can't picture a situation where someone would pull you in and say "Hey! If you unscrew parts from that shotgun its under the limit!"

I wouldn't use a pistol gripped shotgun, AR or otherwise. Not because its illegal, but because its totally ineffective for anything I could use a shotgun for.

When I spoke with a firearms technician last year I asked a very similar question about how things related to OAL are attached/secured, and he said they don't get in to that, they just look at it in its current configuration. However, use some common sense, ie. threads are probably fine, a quick disconnect probably wouldn't fly.

I just sent the firearms center some photos of my 8.5 with folding stock that opens the action when folding - 27" open, 20" folded. I got verbal approval for this, but I'll wait to post up some pics until I receive written confirmation from them that it is still non-restricted.

hkr and myself as well as others were throwing ideas around for the past year and i made up a shotgun using the action open when the stock closes idea about six months ago.i based it off a dlask gun and used nylon strapping to activate the pump fastening the strap to the pump handle as well as the folding stock. when the stock is closed it draws the strap around the back of the pistol grip through a stainless keeper and disables the gun long before the 26 inch minimum length is reached . the advantages are a short compact stow able gun and the disadvantages are it is a bit awkward to carry as well as having the looseness of a folding stock . i am glad to see hkr took my idea and ran with it and i am looking forward to pics .give me the credit hkr for the idea or i am going to be cranky . i am naming the idea the farmer 47 fix.
 
the rules state if the gun can not be fired at less than 26 inches it remains unresricted. if the action on a pump gun is partially opened the gun will not fire . i am able to chamber a round and partially open the action with my folding stock gun and when i swing the stock open and close the action it is ready to fire.it is a simple concept and one that might be marketable. the one downfall that i see is there does not seem to be a commercial folding stock that has the shoot-ability of a fixed stock.if some one would market a high quality folding stock it would go a long way to having the concept accepted .

Full credit goes to you farmer47, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery right? In the end it seemed simpler to give this a go than build a fully custom telescoping stock. Only required minor machining to mate the AR stock I wanted to the folding mechanism.
