I welcomed a new addition to my big bore collection today. It's a A-Square Hannibal in .500 A-Square caliber.

The cartridge is based on the .460 Wby necked up to .510 dia. And fires a 600gr bullet at 2400fps :D

Yes, I am going to fire it :p

So.... AWSOME!!!! Please let me know when you are taking it to the range. Would love to witness the wanton destruction of paper targets!

PS- Now I know who had it put on hold before I got a chance to call them, congrats!

A square hannibal

that looks like the same cartridge that they produced years ago but it was called the .505 barnes supreme,a very potent cartridge,l have a 50-140 that pushes 650 montana bullets well over 2400 and you wont have any trouble shooting it,more of a quick shove, nice looking rifle there 444 shooter ,casull also built one of them to.

You've been shopping at TradeEx :). Nice rifle. I just picked up a nice 8x57 there myself.

The A-Square Manual has a great deal of information and ideas that are just not available anywhere else. The "lion load" bullet has received much bad press, and is said to have resulted in several maulings due to it being to fragile to use on frontal shots on the big cats. Still the concept is interesting, and IMHO not without merit.

I am interested in hearing more about the rifle. What are your thoughts, observations, and opinions concerning it's weight, balance, and functioning.
I have less interest in the cartridge, in that I found the 12 pound .500 Nitro I used over seas quite enough (570 gr @ 2150) I could shoot that rifle from any field position, but only just, and the thought of a .500 Hannibal from prone makes my teeth ache.

I have the Ruger # 1 that Casull built, been doing some stock work on it so havn't shot it much. I think I will play with lead bullets for a while, I have a 450 grain and a 620 grain mould for my Sharp's 50/140.
The 510 Wells is the same case I believe
Who in Canada has jacket bullets for these?

Interesting cartridge and a nice rifle. I met Art Alphin back in 97 or 98 in Kentucky at his factory there, very interesting man. Bought a bunch of his brass (the only place to get properly marked 450 Ackley brass at the time) and his loading manuals. - dan

I emailed Art Alphin, and he replied and offered to provide a complete history of my rifle if I provided the serial number. Kinda cool. Also, he stated that if I ship the rifle to them they will give it a once over and check functioning (trigger, headspace, feeding, etc) for free.

I have to thank Prosper for letting me know about it
Can't say enough about how fantastic Tony is to deal with. Sent me 40 formed brass and a near full box of 600gr Monolithic solids too.

I was quite surprised at how quick pointing it seems. Shoulders nice, and the stock feels very solid and comfortable. It is #### on closing. But action is nice and smooth. As seen in the pic, it has a 2.5x Leupold mounted and also express sights.
I will probably start with cast bullets initially to get the feel for the rifle. I will save the solids for special occasions :p

I have been looking for the A-Square manual. I think Cabelas has them for a good price. Heard there is lots of good load data. Do you have a copy?

There is a company here in Alberta that makes bonded custom bullets. They run about $1.50-$3.00 each. I might try some. Also Barnes makes some 570gr TSX.
