A statement that needs to be made.

Well, they do seem to be very careful when it comes to the RCMP indicating itself in a felony. How did he manage to get all that RCMP stuff? My understanding, it usually takes an in? (Not that I'm in any way implicating the RCMP, it just seems they'd want to be absolutely certain they're not hanging their own members out to dry).
 
First of all my condolences to everyone grieving from this senseless act of terror. I’m a resident of Nova Scotia and live not 30 minutes away from this rampage and still am having a hard time coming to grips that someone could do this in the community. I am also an avid gun owner and strongly believe every law abiding citizen should have the right to defend themselves with tools necessary to do so, that being said, I do believe that even with ccw the incident would of transpired more or less the same. This guy was dressed in an authentic rcmp uniform and driving a near identical replica of a rcmp cruiser, he allegedly knocked on doors or pulled his victims over. No one is going to hear knocking on their door or get pulled over, look out the window see someone dressed in an rcmp uniform with a cruiser and think I better have my gun ready to defend myself. The information that this uniform and car was the situation was not available to the public until the last couple hours of this over 13 hour rampage. It has still not been mentioned what type of firearms were used or even if the perpetrator was able to acquire them legally or not.The rcmp still haven’t released the full story as the scope of the investigation spans over 16 different crime scenes, some of them being houses that were completely burned to the ground with bodies in the debris. I do believe that our country does not require additional firearms laws as we do not have a firearm issue, this was a very rare and unique incident that was truly evil and is impossible to make laws to stop from happening.
 
Recently the rcmp have released information that the perpetrator had an assault charge from 2002 which would be accompanied by a weapons ban. This does not mean he wasn’t still able to aquire a PAL since the application only looks at the past 5 years, had bill C-71 been law right now then the background check would have checked his entire life history and potentially denied him a PAL. Just mentioning this for debate and conversation as I’m sure it will be brought up. Also remember it hasn’t been confirmed this guy was a legal gun owner or not.
 
Canada does not have felonies. You can buy "blank" uniforms online, and you can buy decommissioned police cars at auction.

The guy had an RCMP fetish much like some members here have police or military fetishes.

No "in" required.

Also, for all those talking about CCW and "good guys with guns", just remember: he did at least some of his damage with the gun he took from a good guy that he killed.

This is too true.


It is not the gun, it is the person. What makes a person do that I do not think we will ever know or understand, or comprehend.

I work as a Paramedic here in Nova Scotia and only live 50 - 60 kms away from where this started. I don't believe I knew any of the victims and I wasn't working Sat night or Sunday but I know many who were. Rough day for some of my friends.

My thoughts are with those involved and the families of the victims.
 
Mental illness is an illness like any other, treatment in North America and support for mentally ill people is at an all time low. Government has failed its citizens. I’m not sorry this person is dead, unfortunately though we will probably never know what drove him to this. I disagree with your statement and am disappointed. We should kill people who are mentally ill?!!! Being involved with justice for many years I can say without doubt that in an overwhelming number of these cases there were many red flags that were ignored. I for one don’t want to live in a country where the state has the right to “ put down” who they choose. What if the state decided to put down firearm Impoters?
 
Tim Mcveigh didn't need a gun to kill and injure hundreds. The Canadian Sikhs didn't need a gun to kill hundreds on an airliner. The Toronto guy didn't need a gun to kill and injure a couple dozen.

Imagine how many tax dollars were saved by the police killing this last guy. Imagine how many would have been saved if Cliff Olson or Bruce McArthur had met true justice.

I think many Canadians would agree with IRUNGUNS
 
Put down the broken?

Broken people need care and support. Or are you suggesting we should get rid of people going thru depression, most of war vet with PTSD, and so on...

And who will you give that power to choose and put down people? What if they end up thinking gunnutz are mentally ill? This is a weird and dangerous statement...

As been responded already in this thread violent crime is high in UK - just not with firearms.
Interesting to find out first hand that hunting firearms are often legally equipped with noise suppression devices in Scotland, if we are comparing laws and all......

I feel very very sad for the people who endured this and lost their lives and the people close to them left behind.
Its absolutely terrifying.

When I think of this, I immediately think of my own family and is there anything I could or can do to make sure this doesn't happen to us...

.....keep ending up at the same conclusion.

NO ONE should ever be able to dictate or legislate to anyone how the can protect themselves and their loved ones. NEVER

Spot on. Any infringement on that right should be responded to accordingly. Americans didn’t have their “God given rights” acknowledged until they fought for them. I don’t remember exactly, but I don't think the British would have listened to letter writing campaigns and begging.

I know of dozens of firearms owners - none of whom has their FAC.

The people of this thread seem to think that the govt should be able to execute people who were accused by the same police force who don't even know the license they issue is a Possession and Acquisition Licence...

Because nothing says "fair and just society" like being murdered by the government for something you may not have done. Capital punishment would be completely unnecessary if people took some personal responsibility for their own safety.
