i have an older blr that i had to cut the rifle case off because it was under a bed for about 25 years. It has oil stains on the bolt and when i shoot it the bolt sticks and you really have to work the lever hard to open, it works fine cycling the lever without ammo. What can i use to get rid of the oil residue without take it apart?

Remove wood... place metal in a large pan of gasoline... work the action many times.. remove and blow dry, repeat procedure as many times as required... then lightly spay with G96 Gun Treatment and blow the excess away, clean the barrel and chamber...

BLR's are also damaged with repeated firings of hot ammo causing initial extraction problems requiring replacing the bolt head.

Not sure if its the same issue but years ago I had a BLR in 308 (first gen with the kofin mag) the rifle would cycle fine when empty but when I would fire a round it was real stiff to open. Local Smith said there were some that were chambered to tight and cases would get stuck once fired and the case would expand.

I have owned these Pre-81 types & have known a few freinds with the same.
HERE IS A TRUE STATEMENT : If yours is .308 & you shoot Fact. Federal ammo.
after 2 shots , extraction will become extremely difficult.
Switch to another brand of ammo. & no issues.
This occurred in 3 different guns I know of.
Never occured in different cal. of the BLR.

Dried oil in the chamber acts as glue when heated. Dennis is correct, soak it and if possible, brush the chamber clean of any oil or solvents. Sadly, this will have to be done from the muzzle.
