A surprise buck

So while sitting in my truck eating lunch at noon yesterday I look up to see a doe bolting 30 yards in front of my truck, on my property. I jump out and grab my rifle which is on the ground beside my truck. This area has numerous small clearings and trails. A few seconds later this guy comes bolting in front of me following the doe into the bush heading for the next clearing. Understand I’m 71 years old with bad knees and wearing heavy hunting boots (Redwings). I sprint 120 yards into the next clearing and I’m able to intercept the buck who stops at about 8 yards, head on looking at me. He spins and runs for the nearest bush 20 yards away, I managed a short range running shot with my 30-06, he drops immediately. Not the biggest buck, but big enough for me. Getting the buck isn’t what surprised me, running that far, that fast in those boots is, my wind wasn’t even affected. I send my son a BBD message, he gets there with a smile and states BBD means a big buck down, not a baby buck down. Just a great experience I thought I’d share.

Nice!! Hope I can still do the same when I get to your age! Good on you!! Baby buck big buck who cares really, it’s a buck, it’s down, that’s what count!

I have already have my mule deer buck in the freezer and yesterday a big 4X4 mule deer runs down the middle of the pavement in front of my place.
You just never know when the animals will run by you.

Once again while sitting in my truck while eating lunch and getting warm I filled another tag. -18 yesterday so I returned to my truck to warm up, eat my lunch and have a hot coffee. My truck was parked on the boundary of my property and a friends property. My son and I called in five different bull moose in October but weren’t able to get a bow shot because they always came in behind willow brush. Yesterday, once again my rifle was on the bipod outside. I looked up when I caught some movement to my right in the crop field to see a young bull chasing a cow across it. I got out, picked up my rifle and at 120 yards put two into his lungs. I thought it would be a slow day, but it wasn’t. It was the last day of our local season which made it that much sweeter, four hours later he was at the butchers. We normally sit in tree stands or on the ground by a couple of trees which have been very productive over the years. I also saw a total of 17 deer while driving to my property, either before legal light or on property where I didn’t have permission. I went out expecting to fill my doe tag, the moose was a bonus.

Awesome. Congratulations
This buck we found locked together fighting with another buck. It was insane. After he was shot the 2nd buck thankfully was able to get his antlers unlocked and broke free.
Nature is cruel but thankfully one was spared a horrible death.

I’ve heard of having a horse shoe up your ass but it seems you figured out it’s much more comfortable and easier to run if you leave the shoe in the truck
