A Tale of two rifles

Tagged. I am very interested in which parts you choose GI over TRW/LRB and vice versa. Why the 18.5 barrel? Just curious.

Fair question.
I was sent what is pictured to use to build the best rifle I could with the parts provided.
I decided to choose this build for this thread merely out of convenience

Great thread, as the saying goes, accuracy costs, how much do you want to spend?

LOL, I already know what the result will be as you built both of these rifles for me.

It all relative though, my Tikka shot 5/8" MOA out of the box with the first box of ammo I tried.

Are you going to use the same barrel for each rifle?

nope, i'll be posting the list for the norinco rifle as soon as it arrives.
to use a Krieger barrel would put it well over 1000.00 considering the base rifle is costing 549.00 + tax and shipping.

guys please understand, I am not trying to build a norinco to shoot as good as a Krieger barrelled LRB M25
the purpose of this thread is to tune up a norinco for 1000.00 or less and right beside it build up a premium rifle using premium parts so that folks here, new guys and long timers alike can see what they can expect from going one route or another.

I went with a 18.5 in barrel because I have two other M14s with 22 in barrels. One older Norc with bang on headspace that shoots like a laser and a JAE stocked, TRW bolt Norc.
At my age I'm trying my best to prevent #### loss by having 3 and not two M14s.

I would have chimmed in sooner Thomas but I gotta work to pay for all that stuff.
Anyone wanna put a value on that pic?
I'm trying not to add it all up..... wife wouldnt be happy

Damn!

I know the parts itself worth more than my arm and my leg but I was hoping you are building two in 338 Federal and it should be more interesting with "two" one of a kind rifles in the caliber you always wanted on the M14 platform:rockOn:

Will you consider that or you will save it for the second round and make it even more interesting (lol)?

no one has emailed me to say hey Thomas..... we're gonna make that .338F m14 barrel you keep talkin about LOL
I know ian at herron arms said he could do it and I honestly haven't gotten back them. I'm guessing if I supplied them with a suitable barrel blank with a .338 bore and no chamber..... and supplied the high speed and finishing reamers.... and such..... it would have happened sooner maybe? .338F would be awesome in a semi auto tho.......

I have an unmarked virgin century arms import, norinco receiver and a box full of parts I have put aside for when the day comes. The day I get a barrel in .338F , the receiver will get sent to Nick at Vulcan for a special heel engraving, then back to my bench for the build, then off to barret at arma coat for a finishing..... hehehe but I digress... that will be detailed in some possible future thread :D

Forgive my ignorance but is there enough room in the receiver to have a bolt carrier cycle with the 338?

I'm photographing/videoing some of the "pre build" essentials and. Pre-writing stuff down as I go, then will update thread and put relevant post #'s in title as I update. It may get hard to follow along but we'll see :D
I'm also putting finishing touches on a couple long over due rifles. So hard to get parts fast and when you need em aarrgh.

Patience Thomas! What's the matter, all the fish gone?

That said, I look forward to the results!

funny you mention the fish LOL
we "just" finished what will be our last move for many years (I hope LOL). same general area, just quite a bit further out and a 6 k quad ride from my door to my favorite fishin lake :D
I should be floatin about on the west coast off of Burwood, Nootka Sound with my buddies right now as I type this..... hope they are slayin the halibut in my absence...... but way too much on my plate right now.
I've got 2 nightmare rifles I've been slowly replacing damn near every part on (it's not always easy working the m14 voodoo) and I think before I post anymore fishin or huntin adventures, Vincent and aznshooter just might want their rifles they have been waiting for an eternity for.

anyhow, I've added a crap load of info on the platform and much drama to the battle rifle forum over 8 years LOL time to post up some beginning to end builds and show what they can do. I really can't believe I've made it this far without getting banned for one reason or another LOL
so, on with the show.

so this update is all about choosing the right parts out of the collection posted earlier.
I've chosen to go with the LRB bolt as one, it's new and it fits the receiver very well. the TRW is used which is not a big deal, but the guy who own's this rifle may want to hang on to it for recouping some cost LOL or it would make a perfect candidate for lapping into a Chinese receiver or a future build of some sort. the LRB bolts can be a bit hit and miss on fitting to an existing norinco barrelled action.
I have some pics I will add in the morning in the appropriate places.

the barrel.... Krieger barrels generally come a little generous on the shoulder. A trial fit to the receiver reveals that she comes hand tight over 20 degrees from index..... I'd like to see closer to 15 degrees so off to the lathe for a 1 degree undercut and resetting of the barrels torque shoulder.
15 degrees is optimum hand tight for achieving index with 80 to 90 foot lbs of draw at the shoulder.

I've also set the bolt up in the receiver with the brownells bolt lapping tool to create the bolt lug and receiver initial bearing surfaces.

next will be installing the barrel and prepping for chamber reaming :D
pics coming of the above.
