A Tale of Two Savages...

I bought it through WSS mail order division and dealing with them is about as much fun as watching paint dry. I'll take the issue up with Savage for sure. If it's something simple like having to have the barrel re-crowned, then I'll just get my gunsmith to do it as it would be cheaper than paying the postage for the rifle to go back to Savage.

I did look for irregularities in the crown area after shooting it the first time but that doesn't mean I over-looked it. I'll check it more closely this evening.

I like the CCI Standard Velocity too but it's dfficult to locate here in Nova Scotia. Basically, if Wally World or CT doesn't carry it, I'm pooched. Lapua rimfire is only a phone call and an hour away from Hirsch Precision. It's fairly pricey stuff and it hasn't given me any better accuracy than the much more affordable CCI ammo.

FWIW, I think very highly of CCI Stinger and it's been very accurate in just about every .22RF rifle that I own. I haven't tried it out at 100 yds. but I'm thinking the extra velocity would benefit accuracy at that distance, perhaps even beyond that.

I'm not sure that savage is the only one with quality control issues either. I know of 3 CZ's one 452 and two 455 that had extream issues with them rite out of the box. The 452 had the rifleing stop 2/3 the way down the bore for a half inch and then start again and the 455's had bad crowns and one had a realy bad chamber head space. So bad it was dangerous to shoot it. I've even seen the almighty anschutz have majors issues rite out of the box.
I guess my point is you just don't know untill you shoot it if it's going to be a good gun or not. I have got to the point now that I let the dealer know I'll be back if it doesn't perform to expectations. Since I buy arround 5 new rifles a year wow I spend too much on this sport LOL.
Savage does have a wonderfull customer service department so if the dealer won't help I'm positive savage will.

The debate will go on as to if you should have your gunny do the work or send it back to savage for them too. As it would be an absolute drag to send it back and have to wait for it again I think that if you have a smith do work on it and it doesn't fix your issue you will have a hard time convincing savage to replace it. If were up to me I'd suffer the anguish and send it back. Then let them know where you purchased it and what they gave you for a response. We have a realy hard time with Wss over here on the island especially with there customer service in store. Put it this way I now am on a first no basis with the store manager. As for the CCI standard of you call Henry at budget shooter supply I'm sure he will set you up. The biggest problem with mail order ammo as I've found out is if you order a bunch and it's no good in your rifle your stuck with it. None of the savages I own will do what I need them to do with high velocity ammo and I've been through every brand I can think of. From wolf to rem golden bullet to elly ten x. And found for the price Fiocchi worked best for me. But like I said I do buy case lots and I do weigh each round for competition shooting.
Keep us posted on your endeavor. And if you need help with it lets us know I'm sure there are a few people on this forum that would vouch for the savage accuracy potential for you.

What kind of scope is on the FV-SR? its not one of those leupold Knock offs is it? , either way I think I would try a different scope on the FV-SR before I would say it is the gun ...............

the bullets are keyholing. It's a gun issue, definitely not a scope, sight, or ammo issue.

I certainly think any brand can be hit-or-miss. In my particulat case, I'm (0) for (3) as far as Savages are concerned. Like I said, I've never owned one that wasn't problem free. There's always been something that held back each rifle from living up to its full potential.

As evidenced by my orginal post, I know Savage rimfires are reasonably accurate. I think the 50-shot groups of my Mk2 BV clearly demonstrate that. I was just hoping for more of the same by upgrading to a model with the Accutrigger.

Now that I've put close to 500-600 rounds down range on the FV-SR, I can honestly say I don't really care much for the Accutrigger at all. Sure, it pulls at a lighter weight but it's very mushy and doesn't break cleanly. At least the non-Accutrigger BV breaks clean - albeit a 10 lbs. trigger pull. lol

Once I get the accuracy issue resolved, I'm sure I'll enjoy shooting it. If not, I'll sell it and get something else. It's not a great loss to me one way or another if it doesn't work out in the end. I'd rather not put up with the aggrivation of owning it if I can't get it running properly.

I keep thinking a custom .22RF is something I'd like to try. The more RF I shoot, the more I enjoy it. Reloading is a PITA at times and just picking up ammo and heading to the range for a relaxing afternoon of RF shooting is at times more enjoyable than shooting centerfire rifles.

I know exactly what you mean. I reload for high power shoots and have to reload a lot for practice and competition days. And always find myself running out of time and patience at around midnight the morning of the shoot.LOL. Rimfire is a hell of a lot of fun and can be a good challenge especially if you have a rifle that shoots like a shotgun hahahaha. Just kidding don’t mean to be a jerk.

Have you ruled out bullets being shaved when using the clip. Were the groups shot single shot style. Pretty crappy results all the same. But a feeding issue messing up the bullets may not be helping either. Good luck.

PS, does the cartridge fit in the muzzle??? I read a post a while back where the owner found that a barrel had not been rifled properly and could fit a cartrige in the muzzle. Probably not your situation but you'll never know....

The first thing I would do is take the rifle, along with the target, back to WSS and ask for a replacement rifle. You might even take a box of ammo along with you, and invite them to fire the rifle themselves to confirm the condition.

If WSS refuses to replace the rifle, then Savage should be contacted, giving all the pertinent information. I have found that Savage tends to pay attention to any of these problems.

This is unacceptable accuracy, and the bullets are definitely keyholing on target.

This! They sold you a bum rifle and owe you a new one. Be sure to bring your invoice. Mine has shot ragged holes @50m with Blazer and very consistent 1.5" groups at 100m.

Ive actually got one of those leupold knock-offs on my FV-SR and it works great. Tomochan mentioned it in his budget optics review. Switching between it and my Bushnell 10x40 at 100 yds shows its not a bad scope. Not alot of W/E adjustment but it gets the job done

As relatively accurate my Mk2 BV is at 50 yds., it would be a pipe dream to get 1.5" @ 100 yds. from it. The most accurate ammo I've shot, Lapua, wouldn't come close to that at that distance.
