A very good find - 8x57JS

Performance of the 8 X 57 is on par with .303 british up to 180 gr (Hodgdon's max for .303 British), but they do list bullets up to 220gr for the 8mm.

The only experience I have is many years ago with a surplus German 8 x 57, and with surplus ammo, it shot really well. I had it built into a .22-250 LOL. I personally preferred 7 x 57, but for my present hunting needs, am very happy with 6.5 x 55; for me, about perfect.

If you have a modern rifle, buy modern ammunition labelled "8x57 JS" or "8x57 IS", or "8mm Mauser". If you have an old rifle, just use modern ammunition labelled "8mm Mauser". For older rifles (e.g. 1888 Commission rifles), also slug the bore to be certain it's .323.

This ONLY applies to N.A. factory ammunition for the 8mm Mauser. European CIP loadings, and safe handloads in a modern rifle outrun the 303 British by about 200 fps [180 grain]
I have both chamberings in strong actions. A 180 in the 303 tops out at right around 2610 fps. In my 8x57JS, 2825 fps is the top load. Dave.

I have had similar results as well. With a 22 inch barrel my 180gr tsx load clocked at 2780fps. Throw another 2 inches of barrel and its over 2800 fps.

That 8x57 black bear they had had me drooling all over my phone screen.

Wonder if the rem was created by a guy with a bunch of surplus on hand or by someone for pure gun nut reasons

Yeah I hear you on the Black Bear - I was drooling over it too. Like, I really, really want to very specifically take it black bear hunting. I'll get another Sako someday.

A friend of mine has a 308 black bear I’ve always coveted. I really like the look of fluting and the barrel band sling swivel for some reason. In 8x57 it would be perfect for some reason I can’t put my finger on.

Have you used the ballistic tips in the 8mm magnum before? I managed to track down a few.
, just wanted to see if they are tougher than the smaller calibers?

BB. I have some of those 8mm - 180 grain Ballistic Tips, I have shot them in my 8mm Mag and in the 325 WSM.
I sectioned one, and the jacket is pretty robust, particularly as you get ½ way down the bullet.

Unfortunately, the only animals I have shot with this bullet was one decent Black Bear and a big cow moose.
Both were taken with the 8x57, and bullets must not have blown apart, since they both Exited, leaving Twoonie
sized exits. Both animals died within 20 yards.Muzzle velocity was just over 2800 fps. Dave.
