Performance of the 8 X 57 is on par with .303 british up to 180 gr (Hodgdon's max for .303 British), but they do list bullets up to 220gr for the 8mm.
The only experience I have is many years ago with a surplus German 8 x 57, and with surplus ammo, it shot really well. I had it built into a .22-250 LOL. I personally preferred 7 x 57, but for my present hunting needs, am very happy with 6.5 x 55; for me, about perfect.
