Ok, I decided to play Mosin roulette again and came up with something I've not seen before. This is more of an id question thread so I started a new one. I couldn't resist the great deal Westrifle has on Mosins and grabbed another off the $110 dollar pile and one from the $150 dollar pile.
I'll start with the $110 one. It's a 1944 Izhevsk with the refurb mark on the stock. I'll post separate pics with my queries.

I'm guessing ex sniper with these filled holes in the receiver. There's 3 of them.

It has a Tula mark on the bolt and Izhevsk marks too.

A couple of more neat marks I've never seen.

Now here is the part that really intrigues me. It has a separate serial # on the left side of the receiver and a couple of weird dimple dots beside the Izhevsk mark on top of the receiver.

I can't find anything like it on the net. Overall it's a great rifle with strong rifling, neat marks, cool stock repairs, and came with an uncommon oil bottle. (I collect those too) Comments please!
I'll post pics of the other rifle tomorrow. It's a 36' Tula hex laminate that looks new.

I have only seen that serial number marking on an actual original sniper rifle. They guy who had it had the matching scope also serialized as well. Along with 2 more original sniper rifles :)

Looks like a former 91.30 sniper that had the sights removed after WW2 or during refurbishment and turned back into a regular 91.30.

Bang on Nabs, it is indeed an "ex sniper' rifle. After the war the Soviets took TONS of PU/PE/PEM sniper rifles and decommissioned them into regular 91/30s. No one really knows why, various people claim the accuracy dropped below par, or that the upkeep of the scopes was too expensive, or that they simply didnt need that many sniper rifles. The ones I have seen seem to shoot very well, so I would say the sub par accuracy theory is bogus, but again, Im guessing.

Either way nice rifle, Im sure it will shoot well!

Nice snag getting an ex-sniper at random like that. Back when good quality repro machined mounts were around and original PU's were still reasonably priced on e-bay, a good many of those were re-snipereized and made excellent shooters and a great sniper value compared to the copies now being made.

Thanks for confirming that for me gentlemen. I just started holidays today and will post some range reports soon. I also grabbed a 36' Tula hex receiver with a laminated stock to round out my small collection The workmanship on the 36' is far superior to the 44'. It's also a refurb, but all numbers match and the blueing is perfect. The bore looks new. I may keep this one for display purposes only.
Thanks again.:)
