A very sticky scenario.

I don't know if this belongs in the OT section, but I have to say it, just this once. A buddy of mine who went on a hike (an urbanite buddy) and they found a wounded deer and didn't know what to do. We discussed this for a good deal of time and even he agreed (and he's a hippy) that it'd be best to put the thing out of its misery. But the thing is... how?

Alright, imagine this: you're out on a nature hike, but haven't got a gun and haven't got a tag. Now I know for a lot of people this sounds silly, but please bear with me. Alright, you're in the wilderness, unarmed, and encounter a deer with its leg almost blown away. There is nobody nearby and the wound has begun to fester, meaning it's been hurt for a long time, and the deer is too weak to move. Bottom line, the thing's in agony and nobody's come to collect it. There is no park ranger.

Would killing it by hitting it on the head with a rock make me a poacher and get me convicted?

Yes you would be a poacher, conviction would depend on how many internet forums you blabbed about it on.....

I can't see killing a wounded deer making you anything but a good guy.... have no fear the deer likely would have bee killed by teeth and claws within a day or two anyway.

Even a hippy should always have a knife when they are in the woods.

In Ontario, the MNR has a "let nature take it's course" policy with regards to civilians killing animals in the off season You might however get a CO, or a Police Officer to dispatch it for you.

Ok While in Ontario... I will make sure not to dispatch anything.

The only problem was that they were too far out to have police come to dispatch the animal. Eventually they decided to leave the wretched thing to its fate, which was really sad.

I would probably do something... now having dsaid that, if I didn't... well so what? Had I (or your friend) not come along than nature would still take it's course.
Animals in nature get hurt, get hit by cars etc... in the end nature takes care of it's own.

I'd put it out of it's misery one way or another, if I get labeled a poacher for doing it so be it, I'll still sleep easy at night.

The wolves still get their meat that night either way so me finishing it off so it doesn't suffer wouldn't fizz on me a bit.

There probably aren't to many seasoned hunters here that wouldn't stay out in the bush all night with a lantern looking for a wounded animal they'd shot cause I know if it were me I wouldn't get any sleep. You have the duty to make a quick humane kill and that comes with a hunting licence and if you make a mistake it's also your duty to do your damndest to find it.

There's law and then there's morality/ethics etc.

Sure, you could leave it, and you wouldn't be breaking the law and nature would take care of itself, right?

Personally, that just stinks. Whether I was breaking the law or not, I'd have finished the animal. And, consequently, if I went to jail...well, I' d be able to sleep there too.

...just to add to this...a friend was telling me a story the other day...you gotta here this.

I'll make it as short as possible.

Deer get's hit by car...still alive, unable to move, in agony. A guy I know stops at the scene with one other person. Police show up. The female cop has no idea what to do. They say "It's in AGONY....DO SOMETHING!!"

Her enlightend reply "OH....ok....stand back".

She unholsters her gun...and shoots the deer. Deer starts kicking madly...
....she shoots it again. Now kicking even more.
Another cop shows up.

The guys are like "WTF are you DOING???"

In closing....the cop distarges 5 ROUNDS before the thing is dead. AND....this is the best..

....the cops get in their cars....AND LEAVE!!!!!

The f**king deer is still layng on the frikken road!!

Most CO's and Cops aren't idiots. In the remote chance they 'catch' you doing the right thing, they'd probably see it for what it is. It's going to be pretty evident the animal's been previously wounded and been suffering.

True... Co-werker called the po-lice re. a wounded/sick skunk in his yard...
Despite being in a suburban setting the cop suggested that my co-werker shoot the beast hisself.... Saving the cop repoprt writing as to why he had discharged his duty gun... Guy went in the house reteived his .22 and supervised by said copper shot Pepe Lepew dead.
End o' story

I've been in and heard of a few situations where animals have been put down by hunters or by someone that found a deer hit by a vehicle. The CO was called afterwards or we just dropped in and told him and had no problems whatsoever. He even got a couple of friends permits to keep meat from vehicle struck deer that were finished off ( one with a felling lever incidentally). These guys aren't stupid, finishing off a wounded animal shouldn't be a crime, especially if you report it. I know that they are wild animals but it isn't that much different from a mortally wounded dog, cat etc. I'd be hard pressed to walk away.
