Just back from the range, shooting CCI Pistol Match - GREAT ammo but we had one stovepipe each, which suggests it's shy a bit of oomph - especially at the end of the match when the pistols are getting dirty. Besides, it AIN'T cheap; $10 for fifty. So we're looking for your recommendations of who (if anybody) still makes good cheap bulk .22 ammo? What works good, what have you had no trouble with, what do you recommend?

- NOT Remington Thunderbolt. We bought a couple bricks, and traded the unopened one in on the brick of Pistol Match. Our S&W Model 41 had no trouble with it and was shooting near X-pos's, although it came home quite dirty. The Buckmark camper was misfiring it and jamming closed on FTE's, and grew a dirty great 2" skeg of lead fouling just forward of the chamber; reading further into Thunderbolt, it's notorious for lead fouling.

- NOT Winchester. I bought two 50's of their med-velocity pistol ammo for $3.50 a box, and delighted to get it that cheap; the 41 had 3 misfires out of one box, which were the first 3 misfires I'd ever encountered in my life. Later at the Women's Night the club held, they put a box of Win 555 in front of us and the 41 was misfiring so badly that I put it away and finished the day with the Model 17; it'll eat anything.

So please, what do you recommend for clean, reliable bulk .22?

Second blue box federal, also Winchester m22, Cci minimags, Remington golden bullets and others.

As with all guns, buy a bunch of different brand and see which one your guns likes. Unless you go with high end 22's, you WILL have the odd issues. Why some people seems to get their panties in a knot over it is beyond me.

Blue box federal

Clean, reliable, accurate and cheap. They remind me of mini mags in a lot of ways except they're around half the cost.

For the price I dont expect to find much better.

My Beretta model 71 seems to like the Winchester M22. But to be honest I've had very few duds in the boxes or M22, federal bulk 555 packs or any other .22 ammo I've been using.

The 41's we have at the club will shoot Blazer but only if the guns are absolutely clean. Any fouling around the extractor or firing pin and they start to jam.

I'm not sure any bulk ammo will work well in a 41, you may have to stick to the high end stuff. If you can find any.

Try the Winchester M22 that comes in a box of 2x500 rds. I have found this to be the ONLY Winchester stuff that was good right from the start. I am down to the last 300 from the second box, and only three duds so far. 2 of the duds went off when I rechambered them and shot them. Pretty good in all my guns, but its not cheap at $27 per 500 (54 for the box of 1000)

Warning to all - there's a recall out on M22. You can look-up the two lot #'s involved, but they recalled because there's a chance some of them have a double powder charge...

I have to say I know this sounds crazy but I had great luck with a 525pack of Remington golden bullets in my issc mk 22 had only 1 FTf in whole box. Just went out and bought another box just to see if it was an anomaly and wow they worked great so I'm sold I guess

My preference's are CCI MiniMag and the Federal 525 bulk boxes. Both have been super reliable in all my .22's. I recently picked up some Win M22 and wasn't all that impressed. Had a few duds and even had one that was deformed right out of the box.

CCI 40gr round nose (copper washed) are very reliable and accurate.
my next choice would be the federal blue box bulk packs.
They work well in the Ruger. But the s&w 41 loves minimags

Pertinent information.

Olin Corporation, through its Winchester Division, is recalling two (2) lots of M*22™ 22 Long Rifle 40 Grain Black Copper Plated Round Nose rimfire ammunition.
Symbol Number: S22LRT
Lot Numbers: GD42L and GD52L
Winchester has determined the above lots of 22 Long Rifle rimfire ammunition may contain double powder charges. Ammunition with double powder charges may subject the shooter or bystanders to a risk of serious personal injury and/or death, or cause firearm damage, rendering the firearm inoperable.

For someone who said "NO WINCHESTER", I'm sure seeing a lot of winchester recommendations...

Don't forget to read the entire OP.

For what it's worth I've got m22 from 2-3 lots and I do like it but strongly prefer the fed blue box.
