A Way to Get 10 Rounds in SKS Legally?

It has nothing to do with the firearm. It's the magazine itself that is considered prohibited or not.

Not quite true. If you had a bolt action rifle that fired the same ammo, its allowed to have a 10 round mag of centerfire ammo. So the type of firearm plays a definate part in determining the offense.

Actually, right now my SKS holds 10 rounds nicely. When I bought it, it wasn't pinned. But I've spent a few $ more to get a factory mag that is pinned, so its legal.

Do you still have the original mag? You might want to get rid of that, or pin it. Doesn't matter if you took it out of the gun. Still prohib...

I'm probably going to turn it over to the RCMP (just because they're my neighbors - could scrap it also) when I'm done with it changing it out. I think you're a bit out of touch with the intent of the laws though. Just possessing a prohibited device isn't likely going to get anyone in trouble. If you read the actual wording of the law, there has to be some evidence that you were not just in possession of a prohibited device but that you planned to use it for a purpose dangerous to the public, or in a crime.

From the crimial code regarding possession offenses:

88. (1) Every person commits an offence
who carries or possesses a weapon, an imitation
of a weapon, a prohibited device or any ammunition
or prohibited ammunition for a purpose
dangerous to the public peace or for the purpose
of committing an offence.

If I buy a new magazine to make my SKS legal and the RCMP just happen to do a search before I have the magazine swapped over, I just explain my intent, and that would be the end of it; short of them likely wanting to make sure I followed through on my responsibilities.

Oh yeah, true. I was thinking in terms of semi auto only.

Your best bet . . leave it alone. Does it suck? Yes. Will it keep your rebellious ass out of jail? Absolutely.

If you are looking for a way to reload your sks faster, invest in a few Tapco mags. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to get your hands on, no modification necessary. And they work very well. And the best part is . . . well just read my 4th sentence again.

I have the resources to fabricate just about anything, so if I have to make an adapter, I will. (I have access to a lathe, milling machine, tig welder, and lots of experience with fabricating stuff, particularly out of titanium. I'm a millwright).

But wants to use a rubber band? Hehehee.

What about just using your hand to apply pressure to a partly opened magazine (I've seen people stateside do this to make an SKS 15 rounds, it does work)? Would your hand then become illegal? Perhaps more importantly, how will the govt. confiscate your hand?

I would hazard a guess that with only a little practice most guys could reload an SKS quicker using stripper clips than they could swap out those Tapco duckbill mags.

Got my new magazine fitted up nice and destroyed the old one. So I'm good and legal once again.

Thanks to Dave @ Hical for his fast shipping and assistance in getting it fitted properly.

I really don't understand what all this fear is about. There is no shortage of threads about AR platforms accepting 10 RD pistol mags. It is openly and often discussed here, with no cries for bans or fear of anti retaliation.

Why the fear surrounding the same for an SKS?

What other non restricted rifles out there use pistol mags?

JR Carbine

Berretta CX4 Carbine

Kel Tec Sub 2000

Kel Tec SU-16 takes AR mags, so if there's an AR pistol mag it'll take that

The XCR rifle

CZ-858 can be purchased with the adapter already installed

Probably others, but that's just off the top of my head.

One thing being overlooked, besides the prison sentence, is that the elastic band would have to go around something above, ie the bolt, a moving component.

Also. as far as I know, there are no pistol platforms that use 7.62X39 ammo

Yeah, we're WAY past the elastic band thing. That was actually kind of a joke. Who would actually do that? LOL

As to your second comment, the XCR Pistol is available in 7.62x39. That's where the perfectly legal 10 round magazine comes from. Now you know.

Since others have already adapted this magazine to an SKS, it is obviously possible. So the only question is how am I going to do it. Someone is lending me one and I should have it on Monday. Until then I can't make any progress.

Cool thanks for the reply. I did find some ar15 10rnd pistol mags for sale, there perfectly legal to use also?
