AARs go here!

The skill level of the students on the course was certainly not beginner level so I was able to advance quite quickly with the curriculum and include some drills that would not normally be done in a 2 day Basic Rifle class. The course included military, Police, Corrections, and some excellent civilian shooters who were vouched for by others attending the course. Some great shooting by all at a wonderful range facility.

At the Day 2 debrief it sounded like even the most skilled shooters picked up a couple points each.

Thanks to you all (11) for coming out and to Sean Rauch of Rauch Tactical for taking care of all the legwork involved with booking ranges, hotels, target stands, etc. The course wouldn't have been possible without Rauch and his buds labour prior.

With any luck I'll be able to sort range facilities to run another course soon!

Completed basic rifle as per SMC consulting (Big_Red), the following are my impressions ie my AAR.

Pros

1. Safety.

Very safely run course. Honestly I've been on military live fire ranges and feared for my life but Big_Red ran a very tight show. That and the group of guys attending training were all conscious of muzzle and safety control. I saw nothing that made me uncomfortable let alone worried. Big_Red's watchful eye was ever present during all drills and the safety briefing ensured everyone.

2. Course pace and challenge level.

Very well paced, although we started day one on the very basic skills the course progressed right inline with the capabilities of the shooters present. Always challenging groups to be tighter and drills to be crisper but never overly negative. All drills were thoroughly explained and demonstrated so the shooter feels confident in their own actions. Everyone got better as things got progressively more challenging. Of all the courses I've taken both military and civilian this was by far one of the most challenging, informative and enjoyable.

3. Content.

For a basic rifle course this one really covered a lot of material, major skills covered included: Various firing positions, firing around cover, modification of firing positions to cover, fire and movement, firing on the move, failures, stoppages etc. Lots of the basics, no magic.

Cons

McDonalds breakfast on the way to the range is never a good idea.

Ooh yea the 4 VZ58s ran like champs, I think I saw one stoppage which may have been user error :D.

All in all I give Big_Red a big 2 thumbs up it was a good course well run, I saw lots of poop eating grins. Pics are soon to follow.

It was a blast (pun intended) meeting all of you guys!

Sounds like a great course. Let us know if you do a civy one. I don't really feel like heading west next year to get some training.

One thing that is interesting about Canadian courses...VZ58 type rifles could well be common, just like AK rifles in the US.

Not that they don't have VZs down south but they are proportionally more common here.

Consequently I wouldn't be surprised if Canadians end up being some of the most skilled users of VZ58s.

There are many many many more but thats all CGN gets. If any of you guys want some of the pics of yourself that are or aren't here let me know and I'll do my best to get you what you need.

What was the round count? Just curious.

Round count was between 700-800 rounds for most people.

All in all it was a great course. Beautiful facility, great weather. This isn't my first rodeo when it comes to basic rifle courses. I've taken a few of them, some of them taught by Gunsite instructors and Big Red is the equal of any of them.

This course is well worth it, and, I think, a must attend for anyone looking to enhance their abilities with their rifles.

Overall, an outstanding course.

Again the skill level of all the students was above beginner, so we moved onto the more advanced drills quickly. A couple of the students are deploying pretty quickly so it was a great course filled with some refresher and lots of practise of the basic drills ( reloading, stoppage, moving) with many more skills learned that will help during the deployment.

Pros-professionalism, safety, and dedication to learn from all participating in the course. Big_Red was an excelent instructor, and took the time to make sure that all were on the same page with their handling and drills before moving on, so no one was left in the dark. Also all of the students came eager to learn and picked up the skills with ease.

There was a variety of targetry and different cover available and was implemented to practise with during the course. Cant wait for the next course, should be a good one.

On an unrelated note it was nice to finally be able to try out the new LMT 14.5" i picked up.

Cheers,

Fiveninerone.

Ah.. A few questions. What did you all learn in this basic class? How many days? Why yall dont have your ammo dumped into big boxes beforehand instead fo out of the original boxes? Who was the instructor and why is his rifle slung on his back?

Sorry..

Sorry one more question is it SOP to have a guy on the wrong side of a vehicle in a gun fight? just curious.
