I would like to have a thread about abandoned old forts of Canada that still have some cannon or even just emplacements still visible.
CGN member ''pounder'' posted a picture of the Prince of Wales fort at Churchill that surprised me by it's existence.
Hopefully he will post that picture in this thread and others will join in with some hidden treasures also.
Perhaps a brief history of each fort's reason for being and use or lack of use in battle could be provided?
Notice what a technological marvel the fort below is, having the ability to sweep with grapeshot, all of it's own walls.

Did some research on Prince of Wales fort at Churchill:

Realized once again why Canadian history is given short shrift!
A pox on your reasonableness, Samuel Hearne!

Not sure, the island belonged to the McNabs and had a carnival, hotel and restaurant until the military took it over and built a fort. There is a fenced grave yard with a bunch of the McNab family buried there. You can only access the island by boat or ferry and it's well worth spending a day there.

I'm surprised that the govt hasn't torn them down and put a plaque up on the new parking lot ...they're good at that

Fortress Louisburg, they only rebuilt a small portion of it, the rest was left as the British left it after the last time they captured it. My 6th great grandfather was one of the French officers in the fortress.

When I worked for the HBC at Fort Albany on the James Bay coast an old timer told me about seeing a cannon at the site of the old HBC post at Henley House about 160 miles further down river at the mouth of the Henley River. No remnants of the old post remain.

A replica of the Northwest Co. post Fort William is worth a look if you happen to be in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The original site is buried under CPR tracks so the fort was constructed further up the Kaministiqua River.
