I noticed in a thread about, love hate rifles, an the Abolt popped up quite a bit especially the magazine was hot topic.

why is it that so many people hate that magazine setup??

i personally found it very practical, if not the best?

If you're not used to it, it is very awkward especially if you have the mag detached from the floorplate and try to reattach it under stress. My cousins moose is still at large here in N.B. due to this problem.

Why would you have the mag detached while hunting?

While the magazine design did seem odd to me when I took my first A-Bolt out to the range (many years ago...and I still own a few), I find I quite like the concept. When loaded it is a neat streamlined configuration as with most detachable magazines. Unloading is similar to any other detachable magazine, but with one additional step which I do not find troublesome in the least. Even with no magazine present the rifle is closed and there is no chance of anything entering the magazine well either in the field or at the range. JMHO.

is that where they drive around for hours each day until they find an unlucky buck an shoot it?? get a good trophy photo an say how good the hunt was?

sounds familiar

My go-to rifle is currently an A-bolt I've had for 21years. My sentements about the mag/plate system reflect those of woodlotowner's.

You got it.
Near the end of the season one year I asked a fellow how moose hunting had been.
"Terrible," he replied, "I drove over 1,500 miles and never even seen a moose!"

LOL - You know the guys I used to moose hunt with eh?

However it should be noted that there is a difference between road hunting and shooting a target of opportunity while you are in transit between two locations.

It wouldn't surprise me if most moose are shot near a road. I'm not usually that lucky and have had to pack out lots of moose, but I certainly wouldn't pass up an easy shot at filling the freezer just because it's on or near a road. Most black bears in BC are shot near a road, too.

I currently have 2 A-Bolts and have come to appreciate the magazine design. It is easy to use and keeps crap out of the action.

As for road hunters .................................... :bangHead:

Nothing looks stupider than 2 or 3 guys dressed in head to toe camouflage doing nothing but pounding ruts into the logging roads with their pickup truck. The newer version of road-hunters using ATVs to cruise the skid trails aren't much better.

I for one will never own another A-Bolt mostly because of the magazine system. It has more parts than a typical detachable mag, and it's not as simple, or as quick to load the magazine into the A-Bolt as it is with other detachable mags. The fact that the new X-Bolt uses a much simpler, and quicker magazine makes it evident that Browning realizes that many other people feel the same way about the A-Bolt magazine system.

For every hunter/shooter that likes the magazine system of the Browning A-Bolt,
I would bet there are 60 who hate it.
Had a hunting companion who broe off the little spring that holds the magazine to the floorplate
while hunting. I thought he was going to wrap it around a tree!!

Like stubble, I will never own another A-Bolt, primarily because of the magazine system.

However, I have seen 4 A-bolts now with broken triggers [The shoe itself breaks off]
It is some kind of plated pot metal.
This gives me one more reason to shun this rifle.

I have no complaint with their accuracy...the 3 I have owned were quite accurate.
The X-Bolt system makes a lot more sense.

At present, the only Browning I own is a T-Bolt in 22 WMR.

Regards, Eagleye.

Yeah the Abolt is very popular in Aus, the mk1 models were more expensive but this new run of mk2s is sellin for a good price.

i might of enjoyed a .308 a bolt a little more though

Chinsy floorplates/bottom metal, awful trigger systems, poorly designed bolt assemblies, tiny locking lugs, uncomfortable stocks and a golden trigger and buckmark logo that ropes in the dummerest rednecks on earth...thats my kinda gun.

Gotta be careful with that here in Alberta. Dem smart SRD's (SaRDines) set up fake mooses and deers then hide behind the bushes. Up the road comes some hunter, two or (in one setup) 12 separate hunters whom quickly put the magazines into the rifles and let fly with the bullets. All are charged and have to go to Court to plead for mercy.

Make sure you follow the rules is all I'm saying. :p
