About to buy first 1911

I'm going to see it on Thursday, it's a " like new" Remington 1911, R1 .45 when I purches a used hand gun I always check the regular stuff such as overal appearance, bore, mag well, function. And how clean or dirty the gun is . What I'm looking for is specific things on 1911's and specifically Remington's models that are known fore ware or that have a history of issues

Ask 10 CGNers this question and you'll get 15 different opinions.

10 of which will cite their favourite handgun (of which 5 own only the one), one will say 1911s suck, one will tell you to buy a Glock, another will rant about the prices on EE, and someone will eventually derail the entire thread.

And I enjoy it all.

Many factors here, not the least of which is price and personal preference.

Although I don't own one, the R1 is apparently a pretty good gun. The only thing that makes me leery of buying used is people that try to re-work the feed ramp, sear etc when they have no idea of what they are doing. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what to look for, because I don't know either lol
 
I have an R1, along with a few other 1911. I bought it as a low round count used one off the EE from a reputable fellow.

It's by far one of my favourites, partly for the GI style of the thing, which is a better setup for bullseye or duelist type stances.

I did remove the firing pin block, mostly to get rid of that Rube Goldberg contraption that offended my sensibilities (JMB saw no need for such a "safety" so neither do I). It didn't make much difference for the trigger. The trigger is a touch spongy, or has a bit of creep, but it is still by far the 1911 that I shoot very well with great consistency.

I don't know what else to tell you. It's a solid gun. If your used one was taken care of there's probably not a whole lot to worry about.
 
Do yourself a favor and buy new there are all sorts of options in any price range for great 1911's. Personally I have handled the R1 I would rather spend less money on a SAM for a nicer handgun in my opinion! Send JP a PM and ask him what he thinks of Remington.
 
No matter what you get, you'll have people challenging your choice. Buy whatever feels like a reasonable deal to you, and just remember that its unlikely to be the only or last one you buy. Decide you don't like it? Sell it and try another, there's a market for any gun out there, even hi-points....
If you get a decent deal, you can pretty much just keep buying and selling without much (or any) more investment :)

Do I want to know? I bought JP's gun LOL

Honestly, the price was right and it has most of the Colt look without the Colt price. SAM makes a VERY nice gun for the money, but their finish can best be described as Serviceable. It's not terribly refined. I like a nice, at least semi-polished, blue. My Omega is dead flat and looks more parkerized than blued.

...Oh, and I also replaced the recoil spring in the R1. The stock one was short and soft to the point that my heavier bucking loads had the slide slapping the frame. I put in an 18.5lb one, like the Rugers come with. I'd rather run a heavy spring than mess with shok buffs.
 
You can't tell anything about a gun just by looking at it. Sure you can do a basic function check but that's about it. At my club there are guns that look like beaters and shoot like champs, while others look great and shoot like dogs. If you can shoot them first! Good luck!
