about to start my first batch of .45 reloads, need advice or data from "unique" users

Hi all,
like the title says im about to start my first batch, i chose unique as im just starting out and it was affordable and i could actually find some lol ill give some info on my components, i have mostly norc brass, sellier & bellot, and a bunch of mixed brass, i have CCI & winchester large primers, and 230gr RN cast lead bullets, maybe im not looking in the right place but i cant seem to find a recipe/load data for a mix of these components, anyone got any suggestions for a rookie? any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

You have obviously done some reading, so I am sure you know the basic requirement is a loading manual .. Hard to tell from your post if jut really asking what people load for Unique or if you really want total direction#

Start here ( some load data )#
http://www.alliantpowder.com/reload...owderlist.aspx&type=1&powderid=3&cartridge=35

No loading manual will usually get down to recommending #primers unless the company that puts it out is also a manufacturer, and then they will use their primers and quote the results in a side comment ..

Most people load a few and work up from there .. At the first stages of loading brass is brass and primers are primers . Primers usually depend on your handguns's acceptability ( strike force ) more than anything else in loading 45acp .. Some are hard some are soft CCI hard, Winchester soft ( important in proper seating as a soft primer not fully seated may allow for an unexpected discharge )#

So you can get 10 different opnions posting here with your bit of information, as to what primer , what brass , what powder .. You will still have to pick one and then use your acquired experience to see what works best for your handgun and range conditions

You are also bringing cast lead into the mix .. Wholesale Sports has Lymans cast manual on for $13.00 .. Would be well spent $

To get any response as to powder loads from this post you should add what you intend to lube with , alox or pan, what equipment you have to verify AOL , will you be sizing the bullets if not purchased in cast form .. Lots more info needed

Best to do is do a lot of reading if not going to buy the Lyman guide .. This form has lots of info, but you should also consider Cast Boolits Fourm as it Is focused on cast loading#

Cast bullets bring leading into the equation and then people need to know what handgun, barrel length, barrel twist, lead hardness, what you are shooting for re FPS .. To recommend any Unique Recipe ..

Lots of reading .. Be very careful of quick answers ..

Alliants website says 5.8gr (not sure if that's max or starting as their website sucks balls.) with an overall length of 1.27" for Speer lead RN 230gr.

Adjust accordingly.

CCI are generally the hardest primers and federals are the softest. Winchester is in between but I wouldn't call them soft.

I have shot lots of 230 cast loads over 6.0 grains of unique. I have used heavier charges but six grains is a good load. Some people don't like Unique however I have hag good success with it a several old big bore cartridges. Adjust overall length to match a factory hardball round and check for cartridge fit in your chamber (remove barrel from the pistol for this). A proper crimp is critical. I prefer one type of brass however the 45 is pretty forgiving of mixed lots. Be safe and enjoy.

Hmmmm. I loaded some 45 acp with UNIQUE at less than max. and found it to be HOT. Could be other variables like C.O.L. I use a lot in other cal. but stepped away in 45 acp.
