Hey everyone, this is my first real post and I apologize if this has been answered already but I couldn't find anything.

I started by reading the newbie FAQ, and learned that one cannot simply go to a shooting range and rent a gun to try it out without either being supervised or having a PAL. I'll definitely be asking it the forums if someone is willing to give me some of his time in my region (once my schedule opens up a little), but my question is if nobody can, should I simply go for a PAL right off the bat?

Oh and also, I've just read that you have to give references (who might get a quick interview?). As I said in my greetings, pretty much everybody I know is somewhat against firearms. Is that a problem or do the interviews rely not on their opinion of guns but on their opinion of me? It's just that even if I speak to them about it, I could definitely see my relatives try and stop anyone from getting close to a firearm :p

Thanks a lot!

Even if somebody CAN give you some of their time, you should DEFINITELY get your RPAL anyways. No doubt about that one. You're going to need to find two people who are okay or for guns. You don't want someone who's against guns as a reference, just ask Jinx. You don't want ANYONE who's not pro gun being your reference. Trust me.

Also, if you're hoping for someone to take you under their wing, you sorta need to post where you are.

^^^ ditto FightingIrish. If you know you want to get into owning firearms, better to get the ball rolling and sign up for the PAL/RPAL course. After your complete your course, it'll be 3-4mts before you get your card. If you are in Ontario and you go for your restricted, you then need to join a club, do an ATT safety course/exam, do x number of probationary shoots and by the time you get your ATT, another 3months would have elapsed. Heck, I'm into my 10th week of waiting for my ATT to be approved. You've got a lot of time to kill to make some shooting friends. :)

Thanks guys, I'll start looking into it right away then. As for reference, guess I'll discuss with everyone I know and see what they really think before giving their name as reference!

Oh on a side note, obviously not there yet but if I think I'll end up getting an RPAL, should I go for restricted right away or get my regular PAL first and get the RPAL some other time? Mostly asking because of waiting time. Planning on shooting non restricted rifles first, but could be interested in trying pistols at some point.

Yes. Go RPAL right away. Even if you don't have a desire right now you likely will down the line and the more gun owners with restricted licenses just increase our strength in numbers. Plus it will save you having to upgrade.

Listen to the Irish! Get 'em both done at the same time. A couple shooting friends of mine who have taken just the PAL ended up going back for the RPAL part and had to do the wait all over again to get their RPAL card.

There is a place in Stouffville On were you can rent guns, you don't even need a pal! there is an instructor with you the whole time and they have a variety to choose from, they are a sight sponsor here as well. Target Sports.
