Hi All,

I am starting my 7 y/o daughter on skeet soon. I got her a Mossberg Super Bantam in 20 which is close to fitting well (better than anything else we tried).

I would like to load a super light 20ga, but not sure where to start. I have a supply of Win209 primers, CB 3/4 wads, 9 shot. I only shoot 700x in my 12ga, but its not the right powder for this, so will be buying??

I think that green dot is recommended for light 20g experimenting. I am also going to mod a bushing on my MEC Jr to throw about 5/8oz.

At first I am going to start her just on primers just to get her accustomed to pulling the trigger and not developing a flinch.

I suspect I am targeting 5/8 oz at 950fps, maybe less. She will only be shooting 1/7 outgoing and incoming, so speed isn't super important.

I am worried about recoil though... that little gun is just over 5 lbs..

Thanks
David

7 years old is way too young!!! Why are you doing this, for her benefit or yours? i'm all for teaching kids to shoot, but please have a little patience. Wait a few years, until her body has developed at least 3/4 full size. i have taught a lot of kids to shoot, 7 yrs old and skeet is a recipe for disappointment for both parties.

Thanks, I'll take it under advisement. What is it you have noticed that is a detriment to learning?

Proper safety, stance and swing, IMO, cannot be started too early.

Using primer only while tracking clays seems like the perfect way to supplement her air rifle training. She will also help me work up a soft shooting load for her when I feel she is ready.

So, has anyone made an ultra soft shooting 20ga?

Children that small should only shoot air rifles in my opinion. Yes they can be started too early. they are not physically or mentally developed enough to handle real firearms. You are setting yourself up to have a resentful child who was forced to do something she was not ready for.

A friend of mine took his very tiny 12 year old out shooting and all he did was cut down the stock of his 12ga for her, looked awkward as heck with a long barrel and 1 1/8oz target loads.

I was shooting 22 at 4 or 5, all under very tight supervision, I was also shooting the 30-06 at 13 or 14, it is up to you and your daughter to determine when she is ready, proper fitment is the biggest thing though, as you have pointed out.

I quickly hit up google and found this article, not mine, I cannot speak to the load but it may help you out.

Oh, we had 4 year olds and 5 year olds shooting a .223 Savage last year and an AR as well, the guns weigh too much for those kids but they wanted to try and we had a good rest/bench.

Thanks Fox. I have actually loaded one of those before when I was looking for the right load for me. Its still pretty aggressive. 7/8 at 1100fps is heavier than what I currently shoot. I am down at 3/4 at 1050, which leaves some gaps, but I can shoot 200+ without too much issue.

I don't shoot 20ga, my wife has one and I have shot it but not at anything other than the odd grouse and helping sight in for slugs and turkey loads.

I did not think they kicked very much at all, even with factory loads, not with recoil pads that is for sure, but I am also not 7 :).
