I remember when I was a kid my dad had some "accelerator" cartridges for 30 06. They were a 55 gr bullet in a plastic sabot designed to fire in the 30 caliber guns but I havent seen these things anywhere in probly 10 years. Maybe im shopping in the wrong places but does anyone know where you can get these cartridges ? Or even the components to load them. I think they clocked in around 4000 fps.

I'd be interested to try them again if I knew where to get em.

Funny I was thinking the same thing lately. I found a website for some performance ammo, but it's in the states, so I know that won't help, but the data is very interesting anyway.

rbcd.net

Check it out.

I bought a couple thousand sabots on e-bay for .224 bullets in a .30 cal with lots of data........never got around to playing with it yet.Harold

Might want to just save your money even if you do come across some.

Or buy it and sell it in 20 years on EE for ......ONE BAJILLION DOLLARS!!!

They're kind of cool looking, but I have never heard a single report of anyone getting good accuracy with them.

Cool, so if you want to use 30 caliber powder charges for 22 caliber bullets. And you get poor accuracy to boot. Gotta get me some of those.

Neat idea, but kind of pointless. I just prefer having my 300WM for shooting big things, and 22-250 for little things. I suppose, if you were out and only had the big gun, you could use one of these to shoot something little, but the accuracy doesn't seem very conducive to shooting little things. Only hits count, remember.

"...Neat idea..." Silly idea that didn't work. Remington's theory was to let a shooter use his deer rifle for varmints. Accuracy was/is terrible and they didn't sell.
You can't use 'em in the areas of Southern Ontario with calibre restrictions either.

I remember when they came out in the late 80's early 90's In 30-06, I picked up a box they printed on average 5-8 inches @ 100 meters, save your money and buy a slingshot:D

The idea of a sabot with a .22 bullet in a 30 cal case sounded cool............

This specific application did not work. And I would NOT call it a silly idea. The US Army did a round for the .50BMG and 7.62x51, called the SLAP round (Saboted Light Armour Penetrator) From wikipedia- This is a Saboted Light Armor Penetrator (SLAP) round, which uses a smaller 355-360 grain bullet fitted in an amber colored plastic sabot. For use only in the M2 series of machine guns.

SLAP rounds aren't for shooting wee beasties far away.
The USMC, not the USArmy, found SLAP rounds work fine out of a specially chambered .50 BMG, but not out of a 7.62 rifle or MG. Apparently the sabots damage the muzzle brake.
