"Over 7,400 Canadians own a CZ-858, the Czech-made rifle allegedly fired by Richard Henry Bain at the Parti Quebecois victory party at a Montreal nightclub Tuesday night.

About 5 per cent of the national total, 427, are registered in Quebec.

Denis Blanchette, 48, was shot dead and another man suffered gunshot wounds during the incident. A large TV audience saw Quebec premier-elect Pauline Marois rushed from the stage by alarmed bodyguards.

Bain, 62, faces 16 criminal charges related to the incident, including first-degree murder. He legally owned 22 firearms, a Montreal court heard Thursday.

The semi-automatic CZ-858 resembles the AK-47, the simple, durable Soviet-designed weapon carried for decades by Communist armies and guerillas around the world. Although the long-curved magazine looks like those designed to hold 30 rounds, those legally sold in Canada can hold only five.

In Canada, most CZ-858s have a legal status of "non-restricted weapon," which means that it no longer needs to be registered, and that outside Quebec, ownership records have been deleted along with the rest of the long-gun registry.

A bill requiring the deletion of the long gun registry passed into law in April, but in Quebec, a court injunction forbids the destruction of the registry for now.

7,061 of Canada's CZ-858s are non-restricted; the remaining 412 have a "restricted" category because of a shorter barrel length. This means that they are regulated under the stricter system also used for handguns, and that records will be retained in the future.

A gun dealership in Prince Albert, Sask. lists the rifle for $700.

The data shows that CZ-858s are most popular in Alberta and B.C., followed by Ontario. Albertans have registered over 2,200 of the weapons.

Within Quebec, CZ-858s are popular in a sprawling rural postal code covering much of the southeast of the province, J0, where 69 of the weapons are registered.

The numbers come from an RCMP database released to Global News under access-to-information laws before the long-gun registry was destroyed."

Those #'s seem pretty damned low. I bet there is 3x that amount in Canada. They didn't count CSA and FSN VZ58's either. Posting #'s makes them look like they know what they are talking about, but there #'s are inaccurate. Isn't that why they killed the LGR anyway-as it was useless and a waste of money:rolleyes:

As soon as the LGR fell, I sold all my NR, therefore making this document even more useless than before.

I just don't see how they think the CZ 858/VZ58 looks like an AK-47 they look totaly differnt. they just love using the AK as a fear booster.

*barf*

lots of shooting happening in Quebec...but its the rest of Canada's fault!!!

Also...why are old farts in a night club?

I have only one thought. This article is useless and a boring read.

All that it says is that there are 7000+ of an AK variant in Canada and 1of them was used by a criminal ok so what?

There are millions of cars in Canada and some are used by criminals every day to commit horrible crimes

There are also millions of homes in Canada and several are used by criminal to plan warehouse and etc criminal products and criminal acts so what?

This article was a waste of time and the effort spent on it was a waste of money

Its a carbine that fires the 7.62x39mm. Its not evil.

It is as "dangerous" as any 7.62x39mm carbine. ie sks, or ruger mini 30.

I have trouble understanding why people think these things should be illegal. Compare it to a "hunting" semi-auto rifle.
Similarities?
They will both have 5 round magazines
similar lengths (both non-restricted firearms).
Differences?
1. The hunting rifles will be more accurate and have a longer range because it will use bullets intended for long range shots at large animals.
2. The cz looks like an assault rifle

Which is more deadly?
The general public would think the cz, even though your standard hunting rifle has a more powerful cartridge.

To the average person they look exactly like an AK-47. I've seen it at Gun Stores and Gun Shows.

The comments always said, "Cool, look at those AK's".

Forget about trying to explain the difference to them, they don't get it. If the media intends to run with another Quebec shooting and Wendy's crowd jumps on the new "AK" you could see an OIC. :(

That was not the worst article I have ever read.

Sure, they got their numbers way low, but really, it wasn't bad at all considering it's an article from Montreal about guns. There's also no denying that the CZ has the same silhouette as an AK, it doesn't exactly look the same, but some of you guys denying the fact it's at least similar in appearance are burying your heads in the sand in way that reminds me of how anti-gun Liberals act when confronted with the truth about guns - being realistic goes both ways. It has the same silhouette as an AK and no reasonable person would deny that this is, at least in part, why it's so popular. Many people on CGN even say they own it because it scratches the AK itch many of us all have.

I suppose you could make the argument that their saying it looks like an AK is fear mongering, but you can't deny that the statement is reasonably true.

However, I like most people here, think that my CZ-858 is a better rifle than an AK. Having had trigger time on an AK before, it was fun, but the CZ is a more comfortable and accurate firearm to shoot. We just need full capacity mags and I'd be one happy camper.

being realistic goes both ways.

I agree 100%

I shot my first AK at Shot Show last year. I found it super fun and intuitive, but it didn't win me over as something I really wish we had here. I'd take hunting with AR-15s or regular cap mags over access to the AK family of rifles.

Anyone who doesn't think the AK47 resembles the CZ858 must be blind.
