Accuracy from brand new 10/22..

I just got back from shooting my brand new 10/22 and my god, it can't hit a monster energy can from 25 yards?!?! I forgot to bring a small screwdriver to adjust the factory rear sight, but I didn't expect it to be this bad out of the box.. And no, it wasn't the shooter lol. I'm quite capable of getting on target with a .22. I didn't have a big paper target to get a reference of how far off I am, so I will know more once I shoot paper.

Also, I experienced several FTE's with bulk Federal, as well as American Eagle ammo. I stripped this rifle down and cleaned it before it was ever shot, so I know there's no grease, nor an over-abundance of oil causing the FTE's.. Is this normal for a .22lr?
 
Use the factory mag or BC steel lips and try different ammo to see what urs likes. Pencil barrel 10/22's are not known for accuracy.

I just bought a Ruger 1022 TD and out of the box it was shooting an 1" group at 35yrds. Using Federal Value Pack Bulk Ammo.
 
Thanks guys. I am using the rifle in it's stock configuration (factory mag). I expected this thing to be a tack driver, but I was sadly mistaken. I'm going to get some big paper targets and start over to see where it's hitting. I can't see it being the ammo. I mean, how bad can any ammo be at only 20-30 yards...
 
I know quite a few people who have purchased 10/22s lately and had FTE/cycle issues. It appears that some new rifles need a break in period of about 200 rnds, in particular the stainless models. I bought one a month ago and just manually cycled the action continuously while watching a movie for a couple hours. I've had no problems since doing this.

I'm using both my second and third 10-22. The second one has a BC fluted bull barrel, and shoots bulk stuff through a pretty small group at 50. The third one is a "factory" "deluxe" (with the checkered wood stock, no barrel band, skinny barrel) and it shoots 1 inch or less at 25. Whacked a LOT of gophers (prairies), rabbits and possums (New Zealand) with #2, and I sold #1 - bog standard factory after doing LOTS of possums and rabbits in NZ - it's still in use 15 years later.
 
I wouldn't get upset until you shoot paper first. Get the point of impact lined up with your sights... It's called "sighting in", and its a crutial step taken before trying to shoot something. For all you know it's putting all the bullets into a super tiny group 2" below the can.

Good advice......but keep in mind it may also pattern like a shot gun vs. group like a rifle. You just won't know till you shoot paper

Exactly where I was headed with this. Get some shots on paper and see where you're at.
 
Thanks for all of your replies. I know it needs to be sighted in before I get too upset. My gf and I were in time crunch so we rushed out there and didn't pick up any paper targets on the way. I was mostly looking forward to shooting my supernova while wifey shot the 10/22. Maybe after I shoot a few hundred rounds, the FTE's will stop.

Anyone have suggestions for good irons for this rifle? It'll be used for small game and in the bush, so I don't think optics will do us much good.

My wife bought me a regular plain 10-22 about 3 years ago. It has very rare mechanical problems (can't remember any actually). After epoxy bedding the stock and trying several kinds of ammo, it shoots 5/8 inch groups at 50 yards with the cheapest 38 grain HP American Eagle ammo. It did around 1.25 inch groups before bedding.

Not sure if sighting in the 10/22 is the biggest problem, but hey, if you can take your GF and your wife shooting at the same time, more power to you. ;)

My 10/22 was very good out of the box, but that was a long time ago. I understand they have cheapened the 10/22 with some plastic parts.
 
Just needs a break in. That gritty feel to the action will smooth out and cyclic problems will reduce. I like blazer in both my 10/22s. Its a little oversize which helps accuracy with the loose ruger sporter chamber. As mentioned try shooting paper first. My iron sighted 10/22 is dead on at about 20 yds and 100 yds. Off hand I can print 6" groups @ 100 with blazer. For better irons Ive got some tech sights I could sell you. PM me if interested.
