Accuracy Gains/Losses with UTG tri-rail

im curious if anyone has done any testing with regards to the UTG trirail handguard on whether there is an accuracy gain, reduction, or no change when it is installed.

the reason i ask is because one of the arrogant know-it-all old guard, at my service club relishes the chance to tell me that this style of mount destroys the accuracy because it messes with the barrel harmonics of the m14 ..

i tell him to worry about his own accuracy ( or lack thereof ) and leave me to mine.

my way of thinking is that the m14 doesnt exactly have much in the way of sensitive barrel harmonics simply due to the fact that it is NOT a free float barrell, and has a big heavy movey gas system hanging off it.

I had one on mine for a while when I was playing with a different, more modern, look and I did not notice any difference in accuracy whatsoever. It may well be that something like a Troy Battlerail system improves accuracy but the simple, inexpensive, UTG system I used was neutral on the issue.
 
i am only theorizing , BUT , i would guess that handguard rails such as the UTG and the Ultimak, seen as they use barrel clamps...... will possibly reduce barrel whip somewhat.... and in theory should improve or stabilize accuracy..... but i definately don't see them ruining accuracy. Another way to reduce barrel whip in an m14 is to install a medium or heavy contour barrel..... I'd say the guy at the club is talking out his azz ;)
 
So there you have it Fenix - both the amatuer and professional opinions. The guy at your club is talking out of the cave that don't allow bananas to ripen.
 
i have tomochan's utg rail and i just shot a 2.5 inch group a few days ago with a red dot at 100yrds

YES - ABSOLUTELY messes with barrel harmonics - BUT !

In a good way. The clamps around the barrel unitize's it to the handguard thus stiffening the barrel which results in less barrel whip.

The metal to metal contact allows the handguard to increase the surface area of the barrel exposed to the air - a large heat transfer area - a cooler shooting barrel - less p.o.i. wander.

The only problem with the UTG is the gains are minimal due to the flimsy mounting to the barrel and the fact that it is mounted to the receiver which interferes with barrel stretch {lengthening when it heats}.

The Ultimak has more and stronger barrel attachement points and no receiver connection making it more effective at all the above mentioned benefits.

It's already been said but...

I tried out the UTG last weekend. After 50 rounds I noticed no change in accuracy (positive or negative). Definitely impressed with how solid it was for the price.
 
The UTG didn't fit that well on my Norc. Receiver mounting hole was too high on the rail and line of sight was too low to adjust the scope in. The entire rail was too long and had to be trimmed shorter.
To fix all this I raised the forward mounting saddles with JB weld 1/8", maybe a tad less. Raising the front brought the line of sight up to impact and caused the receiver mounting hole to come down to the threaded hole.
Dunno if my barrel had a different diameter at the base or what but it works now.

Can't speak much for accuracy gain/loss one way or the other, I didn't do that much shooting(no testing) with the irons. 20 rounds was enough to realize I can't see s**t anymore.

I think I got it from Fabsports ??? My memory is about as good as my eyesight these days.
 
So with this type of rail, how many different versions are there for sale? So far mentioned is:
UTG
Ultimak

And in the other thread the Vltor/SA Rail Cluster is shown (but no talk of accuracy yet).

Are there other similar products?
 
Im also looking at a rail system for the M14 / M305
So far Im looking at the following:

  • UTG
  • ULTIMAK
  • Troy Battlerail

Any other contenders. The UTG seems available and inexpensive. The UltiMak is always good kit .. The Troy is $$$ (but a solid monolith rail)

My intention is to forward mount an Aimpoint 2x.
